Jim - what are those reasons? Not picking on you, because I would have my own "reasons" as well, but you may be onto something here... What keeps a person from renting a car?

And yes, Anders (if you're reading this) I know that money spent on an 06 STi is money that could be spent on a rally car... :P

Hey, it's not like I'm your "rallymom" or something! :P If you want an 06 STi, get one. If you want a rally car, get one. Street cars, rally cross, rally, it's all fun in different ways and in different amounts to different people. Whatever makes you happy man! :)

Cheers,
Anders

I just remember you replying to a guy in the nabisco motorsports forum who had just bought a brand new STi or something & then decided he wanted to get into rally but didn't have the money. You effectively told him he had to make a choice between having a new car and having old car + rally car. (I'm considering the second option right now)

Ahh. But he was clearly an idiot, as he didn't figure this out till after "Oooo, pretty shiny car!!! Me want!!"

Finally, what does "cadmia" mean? I found references to zinc oxide on the web, but nothing that works in the context of the amusing event description.
Latin for orange, I believe. Various cadmium and zinc oxides are orange. I remember learning in Latin that 'cadmium orange' was redundant.

Kevin, your 2.5rs should be close to entry level rally ready. Seems like you have good suspension on it already. Just add a "proper" cage, seats, and belts, and other unmentionables and you should be ready to go. Personally, I would like to see another rally entrant from the triangle.

Hmm, also, of the top of my head...
-intercom
-odo
-skid plate
-first aid kit
-triangles
-helmet/firesuit
-depending on class, hood pins

my 2.5RS is too nice to turn into a rally car - I'll probably be daily driving that one and buying something that's either fully built or mostly built. don't know if it will be a Subaru, either - although I'd prefer one. :D

Wow! Kevin's not only a good driver -- he's smart, too! 8)

Don't forget seam welding, lights, tow hooks, tow rope, a "spill kit", a new spare tire mount (most stock systems are too small [and slow] for rally use), jack/wrench setup, gas tank protection or fuel cell, window nets (in the near future), HANS device (ditto), and about 1000 miscellanous bits of hardware obtained, at $2 apiece, via 500 separate trips to Home Depot. :-)

If you haven't heard it 100 times already, here it is again: It's a lot cheaper and faster to buy an already built, already logbooked, already sorted rally car, perhaps with some issue like a blown tranny (assuming Subaru), than it is to turn a street car into a rally car. Of course, some people, even knowing this, will choose to build the car themselves (like Anders, Matt Smith, and Matthew Johnson) because they are just fundamentally too happy and need a dose of misery in their lives to provide the needed balance.

Even if the used rally car you buy isn't your dream car, it's good to start out in something heavy and slow and reliable, because you're likely to bounce it off a few big rocks and berms on your way to learning how to drive it. Then, once you're driving entire stages without lifting, you can move up to a faster, nicer car. And it'll feel great! :D

thanks Cosby. it did help. attendance? it would seem to be a club wide concern in my opinion. 2005 seems to me was a big year for THSCC. new bus, new equipment etc. even the IRS expects a down year every seven or so. events succeed due to the efforts put forth by the organizers, attendance is secondary if the foundation is strong. eventually, well run events catch on with word of mouth advertising.

i throw this suggestion out simply for discussion. maybe the club should sponsor a rally beater for event rental. get some of the old timers out for a day in the dirt. if for no other reason than to get more verbal response regarding rallyX.

I'd say that the Dirtmaster 1600 is about as close as you can get to a club-sponsored car, considering it is/has been co-owned by 4 past THSCC presidents and one AX VP :) And it has a winning history and it's available for rent to all the old-timers! We need money for new motor mounts!

As for missing events to have some time off from racing, I will miss an autox looooonnnng before I'll miss a rallyx. And I know of a few others who feel the same. (right, just a FEW )

I'm with Kevin on this attatude. I have had to miss two rally-x events so far and have regretted both. The last was due to a required wedding in Gatlinburg, TN (the Las Vegas of the east, without the gambling).
Art also makes a good point. Why attempt to boost attendance beyond the break-even point? As people come out and discover the rush that is rally-x driving the ranks will grow. And, those of us who have already started will have an experience advantage and will look "cool" until the rest catch up.:-)
