Here's something I put together this week between periods of boredom at work...

http://home.att.net/~kevinmallen/damping_curves.xls

This info is for front only; rear damping is slightly lower on all of these, but with same approximate ratios between them.

From listening to the "experts" on nasioc, the STi is supposedly very overdamped, and the WRX is slightly overdamped, but they have nothing on the Teins.

WRX stock spring rate = 160
STi stock spring rate = 224
Tein HG spring rate = 213

For those who don't know, the Tein HG's are a rally suspension that I've been using for track, autox & rallycross.

Oh, yeah - rebound is + and compression is -

Interesting, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I haven't researched damping stuff.

The 0.0 to 0.3. What is that?

And it seems that the range of dark green indicates that the Teins have more damping force, at a broader range?

Also, where did the information come from? (If you have a strut dynomometer, you better fess up!)

Cheers,
Anders

WRX & STi info came from nasioc motorsports forum, and was a scan of a Tein catalog or something. Appears to be actual dyno plots. I got the HG info from the owner's manual.

Rebound damping is +, compression damping is - and the scale is in Newtons.

the x axis is piston speed in mm/sec.

So by comparison to the STi's damping, the rebound damping on the HG's appears to be high enough to handle 400 or 500 lb/in springs, although the actual springs used are only 200 lb/in.

And the compression damping is a lot higher than anything else I've seen. I guess the theory is, soft springs allow lots of suspension travel, really stiff compression damping acts like a stiffer spring to keep the suspension from bottoming out when hitting big bumps landing jumps, and the stiff rebound keeps the car from bouncing back up in the air after the landing. Or something like that... :D

Anybody who knows what they're talking about care to share?
