SCCA rallyX allows winter tires to compete as street tires. Traditionally THSCC has treated winter tires as non-street tires. The last couple of rally crosses we have allowed cars running winter tires to run in SU2. The winter tires have a much more aggressive tread then our street tires.

Have we changed the rules?

The guys running the winter tires have been very nice. I am not sure if anyone told them that they should be in NU2.

I think we went to a 4 quarter spacing between tread blocks to categorize non-street tires. I'll let one of the officers comment, though.

That's the general rule. The "duff clown car" runs in NU2 because of the snow tires. Snow tires tend to have very soft side walls, so you really can't drive all out (without using tubes) or you'll deflate them in a single run.

(The subjective "competitiveness" of the car / drivers is also factored in. eg. some people run street tires in rally classes.)

As far as I know, the 4 quarter spacing rule between tread blocks is in effect. Smaller than 4 quarters is street tires, 4 quarters or larger are non-street tires. We've been lax about enforcing that rule except when we notice it. Of course anyone can run street tires in non street tire classes as it does not create an advantage. e.g. Kevin Allen drove his STi with street tires in the non-street tire class. This was allowed because he normally competes in non-street class and street tires is a disadvantage over the non-street tire class.

It's not my intent to be the tire police, we operate pretty much on an honor system. This is especially true in classes that we don't have a large contingent of competitors. This is suppose to be fun. We don't want to end up with a 500 page GCR book with hours of tech before each event.

I think that most who are misclassified are misclassified by accident and will have no problem being reclassified. We'll take the liberty to reclassify those that we notice.

I hope this helps.
