I'm guessing Cheeseburger removed that, though. If you remove it, you have to put a filter on the vent line to keep dirt from getting in. There are lots of threads about it on nasioc, etc.

Our rally car doesn't have all that crap, and my STi will soon be without it.

Nope, didn't remove it. I've disconnected all of the hoses to and from it on both ends and the air flow is good. It hardly weighs anything so there's not much incentive to remove it. Regardless of the description there's no charcoal in it; its just an empty plastic box.
