This is shaping up to be the biggest event in the THSCC calendar year. The HPDE scheduled for September 6-7 has been expanded. We have partnered with the SCCA to host an autocross on the skid pad on Sunday and the track has agreed to let us use the rally school roads for a rallycross. Drew and I have not yet worked out the logistics of how to best use the site, but we are certain that we could set up a killer course using some of those roads (visible on Google maps for VIR, Alton VA). We are excited for the opportunity to use this site and could possibly begin a regular rental there if we can recruit enough entrants to cover the future costs (the first event is "free" - as in covered by the HPDE and autocross).
The primary intent of the big weekend is to expose as many newbies as possible to the joys of motorsports with three different driving skill sets. (The weekend is as yet un-named, so if you have a great name send it to "El Presidente", Rodney).

Your faithful VPs are trying to determine if it would be a boondoggle to try for two events in the same month, knowing that this is the beginning of school and the HS football season, etc. (Drew and I are either too young for the whole school starting thing, or too old to care anymore.) We really would like your feedback in determining how best to serve your racing desires, so please take a moment and consider how you would like to see this develop and whether you face conflicts with the schedule. For my situation, my lovely bride cherishes those lovely September camping weekends, so I'll be encouraged to do one event (and I really think VIR could be cool).

We have ran a portion of that course in the General Lei at NASA's Hyperfest some years back.

It had rained all week and the event day as well and it was like soup. I'm not sure how, but the portion we ran was some how 95% uphill. The General Lei was the only street-tired 2WD car (actually 1WD) that didn't get stuck! On the only downhill portion, there was a huge mud puddle at the bottom and we hit it hard enough to pop the grommets out of the floor pan and get water/mud in the foot wells.

Here's a picture with Stephen driving and myself riding shotgun:

Now I have to figure out how to get two cars to VIR!

The rally-x sounds great, but the skidpad is way too small for an autocross. If Patriot is available, setting up a coned course on part of it, similar to the way we do at NCCAR, would be a much better option.

Patriot is $5K, we could never recover that. And we routinely had very good Autocross events on a site half that size in Morrisville at the Belk warehouse.

1/2 that size? The edge dimensions of the skidpad at VIR are only 285ft square. Leaving room for run-off obviously requires a good bit smaller square than that. I can't fathom an autocross setup on a 140'x140' lot (maybe using 110'x110') being worth a thing? At Greenville auto auction site, the narrow width was 250' but it is just over 700' in the depth dimension, so that worked ok but most were always concerned about the width issue.

I guess Patriot is pretty expensive on-season, but I was thinking if it wasn't booked they would make a deal. Guess not. :(

I ran at Morrisville once and it was NOT a good autocross event. It was akin to running in a McDonald's parking lot. John Kerfoot ran under the chain-link fence that day and had scars on his helmet to prove it.

Chuck if I didn't know you I would think you were trying to be funny. 'VIR' and 'deal' are mutually exclusive terms. I still contend they will be billing us for the air we breathe as soon as they find a way to measure and charge for it.

lol, no, I'm pretty dense...ask my wife. I was thinking back to a couple of years ago, off-season, when I talked with someone there about renting Patriot course for 1-day during the week which obviously isn't a good memory to fall back on. They seemed a bit desperate at the time and were willing to do something in the low $2k range.

Scca is used to running on small courses and setting up good events.

I am looking forward to this event. With the karting event it is going to be a LONG automotive weekend!

Scouting report: Today Drew and I drove up to see the site and conjure up a workable course from all of the possibilities. After hours of deliberation, slaving over possible course maps and driving segments of the course I believe that we have a winner. We're working on getting a trial run video uploaded so you can see the course. All I can say about the course is that if we use our traditional 2 minute bogy time a DNF could become FTD. (In other words this will be a longer than 2 minute course for most of us.)
We are hoping to attract some new blood to this event, but we may impose a "novices MUST have an experienced rider along" rule in an effort to prevent any serious over-driving. (Oh, and Sebastian is now officially a novice  ) This rally-school course was set up in part to train DOD drivers in off road driving (sort of a high speed chase off road, if you will), so parts of this course are pretty quick. We basically seamed parts of 3 courses together to get to a reasonable length a course. We may have a couple of places where we add a cone or two to promote safety, other wise we envision 4 cones (two at start and two at finish), other than that it's pretty much just follow the mowed trail. With almost no cones we plan to use course workers primarily as red flag stations. You shouldn't have to run for cones, but we need to be able to stop other cars should someone spin or stop on course.
If you have any plans in September that could possibly conflict with this event, now is the time to start changing those plans - this is going to be one heck of an event.
Watch for more details as we flesh out the organizing details.
If you watch the video there are a couple of things to ignore. 1) ignore the tires on the course; those will be removed (especially from the outside of any turns), 2) the grass today was about 3' tall and we wanted to leave it that way, but the track maintenance staff was concerned that if anyone left the course the dry grass could contact a hot exhaust with unfavorable results. Since our event is in September the grass should have a chance to grow back if they mow it this month, but it would be shorter and greener than last year's broom straw. 3) The video just shows our first run through to check the base line time (a few runs were made with our VIR host on board that were significantly faster - but none under 2 minutes). Luckily my GoPro battery died before Drew let me take a test run; that way no one gets to see me totally blow the braking for the hairpin turn and drive into the deep grass. I did get a brief run through in the VIR pickup truck before we did any cut through to connect the courses. If I had tried I could have had a 3+ mile run through those trails. If we have the opportunity to run here again, there are plenty of other track configurations that we would love to try.

If the general is there, i am sure you could work something out.I would offer the golf, but the history of it is, me,dad , and Carl Fisher went together to buy it.and I wanna know who is in, before i start making promises I cant keep.Bret Murphy,he has a reliable forester, who was quick at fayetteville,I say, let Rodney come out and I dunno, ride with drew or someone. If the president drives,we cna make rally cross work for a long time.Would you believe my father actually wants to train, the younger generation next year.If we keep ,dad and Drew, coming up with crazy stuff, he may never leave!!!

The golf seems to be in good shape, so we will be there. It is not fast,ut it is nimble. We will work something out with drivers, i am sure someone can drive with you.

Just in case you can't tell from the laughter in the test car on the course, Drew and I are really excited about using this site.

Also, it's time now to get ready for the rest of the season beginning with our Wilson event on June 22. We had a light turn out for the Fayetteville event that turned out to be a terrific event, so don't let another event pass you by and come out and play.

It is not too early to start talking to all your friends to convince them to come out and join us. We really do need better attendance to support our "dirty habit".

Sorry for the low resolution of the uploaded video, we had to use the mobile version of the video to get it to load in a reasonable time. I'm not entirely sure how people manage to upload long race videos. If you know a trick to go from GoPro to YouTube drop me a PM. (I'm a newbie to the technology)
