Just wanted to let everybody know that Kooter and I went to NCCAR to check out their rallyx area today. Drove my rallyx car, used their fancy Hunter alignment lift to change to rally tires, drove around a little bit. Used my floor jack to change tires afterward.

Simon and Sam are pretty excited about getting some use out of the land before it's paved, which they're hoping will be sometime this year. But it will basically be whenever they get funding for it.

So our thoughts are that it's plenty big, is a little rough at the moment but it should be easy to make it smooth enough, has nice drainage, some good variety of slope angle for making on-camber and off camber turns, and looks like it will be in good shape after an event. I drove around in a basic top of 1st/bottom of 2nd pattern and Sam followed my tire tracks with the "small" tractor and blade. He did a few laps around, and then I did a few laps with the car at competition speed. The dirt was still a little deep and loose in most places, but they said it won't take much to get to the underlying clay, if that's what we want. It was already exposed in a few spots, and I can tell you, that's what we want. And if we want, they can make it a "permanent" course, like I have at my house. We'd just need to figure out the best layout and then let them prep it. Sounded like this would be the easiest/ cheapest thing for them, so I'm ok with that. And Sam asked about whether we like to include elements like jumps in our courses. They seemed really flexible and willing to work with us to make sure we're happy.

Still working on schedule, but we should be able to get a few events there this year if we want, depending on their funding. Preferably early in the year, of course.

So any comments or questions?

yeh i've got one or two. will it be 2WD friendly? with good drainage then you believe we could have a decent "wet" event? will 2WD cars be able to handle a rainy day course?

Thanks for checking this out and planning in detail!

We will be there for whatever events can be scheduled there.

(And the Audi front strut mounts and towers prefer no jumps, or at least be able to bypass) :D

I wouldn't want to run an event there if it was wet; would be too gooey to get decent grip. I was just saying that the water shouldn't be standing around in mud holes, if it does rain. (it slopes downhill from right to left in K's photos) So maybe it could rain a day or two before and still be ok? Hopefully we won't have to find out.

the second time i ever got stuck, was in my sentra when the alternator belt let go.. it was really muddy, and i did not have the power to get up the hill. now.. with that surface, it is possible i will run my car.. my sentra is not doing so hot right now.. so, i think that with a muddy surface, 2wd with lsd and good tires, should be fine. lsd and tires make a big diffference in mud. lockers are even better, but i dont reccomend that in fwd. rwd with a locker and a bmw 6. i reckon that is fine. anyhow. i am up for running my wrx in the mud.. i like when it is slick, sideways and foot to the floor, and throwing mud everywhere is, where it is at for me man. I even take my mountain bike in deep stuff.. I have aftermarket tires on her, so i can go just about anywhere with it. I am all for it, rain or shine, lets do her!

Way to go! That's just what we needed? I talked to one of the people on the board of directors last year about rallycross but he was not too interested in racing that doesn't take place on pavement.

IT'S NOT RACING, btw. It's a car control event. According to Simon.

It's not even that. They can't afford help to till the farm land so we must use our cars to chop up the dirt. Or something.

We are going green.

I was there a few weeks ago to see about test/practice for the rally car. It was pouring, very wet and that space was unusable, at least for me. Mind you I think they'd just cleared it so the top 12" was soft sticky top soil. If they can clear it down to the clay, and it doesn't/hasn't rained if might work out.

We also took a tour of their off-road circuit with a mind towards using it for a rallysprint event but it had some sections that were too rough for a car at speed. We even got Sam's 4x4 completely stuck on the slope up to the rallyx space you checked out. Needed their military style truck to come and pull us free. With some more prep it might work out.

Kieran and I are going to NCCAR on Wednesday and will be using their large (3.3 acre) gravel parking area to do some testing and practice. Will be tying to apply some of the lessons I learned at Tim O'Neils Rally School to my Focus.

I'll check out the rallyx space too to see how mucc improvement there's been.

Simon

Yup. We'll be there.

See the Sandblast thread for pictures of that tree.
