Our Audi front upper strut mounts suck. They fail a lot, and it's a known crappy design on some Audi's and VWs. We're running better aftermarket mounts, and even those fail on a rough course like BMW Farm. There is not a different contributing factor we can work around (they fail with stock struts/springs and with aftermarket) - plenty of other Audi owners are replacing them after every event. We're tired of replacing them.
We need to re-inforce our strut towers since one deformed a little from the last upper strut mount failure. I was thinking that if we're going to go through that trouble, then why not switch to a better mount design in the process, if possible?
I have been hearing that the Impreza front upper strut mounts are great. I'd like to see if I can adapt that to the struts and springs we're running. (I know I can adapt it to the strut tower, since I would just weld in whatever metal is needed there.)
Does anyone have a fully assembled Impreza front strut complete with upper mount that I could borrow to get some measurements? I'm looking for the whole assembly because I need to see all the parts above the spring - the metal "hat" that fits on the spring, the rubber upper strut mount, any washers in between etc. I would not hurt the parts - I'm just wanting to check them out to see if I can make them work.
If you have a strut and mount I can borrow, could you bring it if you're coming to the RallyX this Sunday?
Thanks!
Richard
