So where is it you can get skidplate-sized sheets of al-yuminium around here?

Ryan gave me an old road sign (not stolen!) and it worked perfectly. I was surprised at how thick and strong the aluminum was.

I have to be in your area today. Do you want me to get one from him and bring it to you?

Hey Walter, if there is a legal source for old aluminum signs, could you bring one to OCS for the Dirtmaster 2000? Let me know if you need an "inducement" (bribe).
I believe that the mud knocked the alternator belt off our car at Bret's and I wound up dieing on the track in deep mud. The mud was so slick we couldn't even push the car with a couple of extra helpers.
I did discover that you can drive a car to the pits using one of those jump start packs under the hood. :D
Regards,
Charlie G

Road sign? Yes, please. Where do I go to pick it up? Needs to be at least 24"X30" btw.

edit: Actually, I'll take a couple of them; Liz wants a skidplate for her STi.

If there is a "source" for these signs, I'd love to get (or even buy) a few... maybe 5 depending on price and availability.

Try http://www.doa.state.nc.us/ssp/

Along with siezed items they carry a lot of state items too. You may find street signs.

Ryan doesn't have any right now. He only gets one every now and then when they are no longer functional for use by his company - they get bent or too old. I am positive he can't get more than one or two a year. He pulls them out of a scrap pile after they get messed up.
Another source might be good since so many people want one. They do work well.

I doubt you will find street signs at those auctions. Although the old non-diamond grade signs are not legal for contractors to use, that doesn't stop the DOT from using them

I am Walter's hook up, the signs I had were old non-compliant 48"x48" Orange road construction signs. I used the last one I had to make a plug for our Lemons cars sunroof but I'll check around to see what I can find this week at work but I think the well is dry :(

With the price of aluminum scrap what it is, you probably won't find too many places willing to "give" these away for free. Most of them end up getting sold for scrap.

Road signs are about half the thickness needed for a real skid plate. Although for moderate off-road use it's probably fine but wouldn't help much on some rally stages I've seen (if that's what you're planing - who else thinks that it's way past time for KA to let loose on a real stage?).

We did rescue a victim of Katrina and turned it into a car jack plate for a soft surface and 4 smaller jack-stand plates.

Well, if they're too thin, I'll sandwich two of them together. If I can find any.

You may be able to buy sheets from Raleigh Sheet Metal (for info: http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/ ... 9-828-6549)

also this may be helpful, but somewhat specific (Subaru).
http://custompinoyrides.com/2010/04/diy ... kid-plate/

prefabbed plates that are good. (Have one, works wonderfully)
http://www.rallyarmor.com/store/skid-plates-c-58.html

Hope this helps someone.

As for locating and using old street signs, I've come across them at yard sales and such places from time to time.
