I've been in this long relationship with a group of doctors who track bmw's. We have tried several times to prep a Lemons/chump car but have always run into time management problems. After obsessing over sandblast video I've convinced them that we need to try rally..... They seem interested but I've thrown a monkey wrench into the works as I've offered up my basketcase e30... now we have two platforms to choose from.... both have their "issues"...

What do you think would be the most fun to run?

The Mustang. At a Tarmac rally. Then if you like it, buy a used Subaru non-turbo rally car for gravel.

You do NOT want to buy a DSM!!!!! They are fast but break all the time. Yeah, yeah, VK I know you told me this before I bought the Laser.

Kevin is right. I don't see how you can go wrong with a Subaru. They are perfect for rallycrossing.

Bahhh they don't break as much as most people say they break. The withstand alot of abuse.

The problem is you need to do a few things right off the start so they don't break
-Clutch (I hear you like doing this Walter)
-Timing Belt

As long as you don't do 6k launches all the time or turn the boost up to 22 psi all the time, they are decently reliable.

I can tell you that you do not want a E30 to rallyx.

I didn't clarify enough.

You do not want to rallyx an E30 on street tires. Rally tires might be a different story.

Having run and E30 on dirt a few times I can say that it is deliriously fun, but it is definitely less fast than a FWD car. Even Mike Whitney who had been a regular winner in FWD cars (Dirtmaster 1600 - 1989 Toyota Corolla) he was slower in his E30 rally car. We have even had an E30 325ix 4-wheel drive car that did not do particularly well. Part of the trouble with the E30 is that the 2.5L engine puts it into the over 2.5L class with FWD turbo cars (lighter & faster).
The Audi would be in good company at a THSCC rally-x.

Audi if the Doctors are backing you; while fragile might not be the exact word i am looking for here, shit breaks and it is expensive to keep running at its full potential.

solo effort? Scoobie......... and i hear they make for a fine DD also.

as Charlie said, unless you have a 325ix with a monster motor there is no point.

The General is faster than any RWD BMW to date if i am not mistaken. and there is a vacancy at the moment Jake. you could buy in fairly cheap i do believe.

Sounds like I may want to keep the E30 for when I ball up the mustang????? Perhaps its better suited on pavement....

I'm trying to get this group of guys involved in anything besides Ice House Bench Racing. Which does have its place but gets old.... We have tried on 2 separate occasions to prep this audi 100 for chump... no go.

I really like scooby do's and have had a couple... so I'll bring that up to the group as well. The two cars I listed are paid for... one more car on the property and it will offically be MAINE....

The audi has all of these over thought parts that look like they belong in either Docs Delorian or a supped up snowmobile... plus as it sits 4200# :|

Thanks for the input...

You and VK NEVER got your brake problem worked out on your Talon! VK thinks they break a lot and they are not easy to work on. The clutch part was easy. The transmission part was hard. You have to twist, rotate and wiggle it up to the engine and it took three of us. The timing belt is a pain because there isn't much room to work. Les did ours and I helped. He had done it before.

However, the car has been run very hard for a number of years at rallycrosses. So, you are basically right. Now come over and help me figure out why it won't start! It has fuel and spark. The computer looks great and everything is hooked up. All the fuses are good. I'm to the point of checking relays and fusible links. Maybe the injectors are not getting a signal to fire. I'll do a Butler and take them out to see if they are spraying. I'll try not to catch my car on fire!

Why not co drive with a few different guys and see what you want to rallycross. You can jump in the Laser for one rallycross. but be ready for it to take off when you mash the gas! Right Mike W? IMO an E30 is a poor choice for rallycross.
