For those who don't know, our very own Kieran Wright (my son and codriver) has hooked up with another rally driver, Garry Gill from India, to run the Rally America national championship. It's been a crazy ride so far with Kieran taking on the task of final preparation and often repairing of Garry's newly built 06 STI Super Production rally car. He's been rushing about the SE getting the car finished, tuned, tested, repaired, and finally transported from DC to Washington to run in the Olympus Rally near Seattle.
It didn't go well. A moderate off on stage 1 put them up on a tree stump and in the ensuing efforts to drive it off, the engine blew. We think the engine was doomed from a catastrophic turbo failure the previous week during testing.
So, an ignominious (and expensive) end to their first rally.
They are now in Portland after the engine was rebuilt and about to try again with Oregon Trail Rally. Yesterday Kieran was out running up the miles to break in the new engine when the radiator split and he had to wait for a tow 100 miles back to Bend, OR. He didn't get back to Portland until 2:00AM and then up at 6 for recce today.
I've started a
thread on Special Stage if you're interested in following along. And results will be posted as they come available at the
Rally America site.
