I haven't seen markings in the Apex area.
The last ones I saw were in Danville after an AutoX. I think it was 10%.

I'm 90% sure that the BP at Leesville and 540 is labeled as having "up to 10%". Less certain, but I think the BP at Page and hwy 70 just west of Brier Creek says the same.

The Exxon station at East Club Blvd. and I85 in Durham has a huge banner out front that reads "NO ETHANOL HERE." It's usually pretty crowded.

A long overdue update...

Well at one point I considered a weak battery as the problem. I had it tested at the auto parts store. They reported it as ok, but needed charge; 420 CCA vs 480 CCA rated. I used a battery charger/booster for a couple of mornings to help start the car. The first time the car started right up. The next time; no joy. The same problem. (won't start on 1st attempt; cranks right up on 2nd attempt).

One morning I bump started it; again success one day, not the next.

So I'm on to the gas thing. On Monday I filled my tank at an Exxon station (I had been using Shell and BP). Well the last two days the car has started on the 1st cranking attempt in the mornings.

If the success continues... umm I'll wait a few more starts before making any definitive statements about brands of gas.

Any way to find out ethanol content when it's not posted on the pump?

Seriously, though, you piqued my curiosity on this one --

GM Flex Fuel vehicles use a sensor which can be had on ebay for $150. Megasquirt apparently sells kits for conversion of regular cars to run on E85 with lots of tech info here:

http://www.megamanual.com/flexfuel.htm

More on the DIY front I was thinking about measurement of specific gravity. With a really good scale and very accurate measurement you could probably calculate the vol% from the weight of a known volume.

Also electrical conductivity -- Et-OH should be partially conductive and CxHy not, so sticking a voltmeter with probes acurately spaced might tell you something. But it would be very temperature dependent. And it might not be a swell idea to place electrically active probes into flammable liquids. Wear nomex.

You'd have to determine the level of detergents and other additives in solution as well. If you had access to a distillation apparatus, I'd prefer to separate the various components that way and get a reasonable baseline.
