Actually, it's about 263 at the crank. Several Miatas (NA and boosted) have been measured to show about a 26hp loss through the drivetrain. This is independent of HP level. There have been several discussions on various boards about this and for those that have had a chance to actually measure it, it always seems to hold true. The “15%” rule is generally a good starting point for a stock car but it doesn’t translate with increased HP figures. At least for Miatas…
I’ve datalogged my car @15psi before and it made about 270hp at the wheels. Of course, the same “road dyno” showed my current power level to be about 220hp at the wheels @10psi so that figure is probably a little bit low. I need to actually measure my wheel/tire diameter (instead of estimating it from a standard calculation) to get more accurate results. Either way, it’s way too much @15psi to put to the ground at a typical auto-x course in 1st/2nd gear. Or maybe I just need more rear tire!
Needless to say, at slightly above the 300rwp level, Miatas are known to start grenading trannys and rearends depending on the abuse level. While those power levels are fine for 3rd gear and higher use (or mild launches), it’s probably not a good idea to run that way for extended periods of time in auto-x or drag trim. Unless you have a pile of spare drivetrain parts lying around… And are fond of excessive tire smoke...
