Hi All,

I am taking a crank to a machine shop tomorrow for what I hope is just polishing.

A. Is there a Workshop Manual or Haynes Manual on line for a 1994 - 1997 model (1.8L engine) that I can down load? Preferrably for free. :)

B. I do have a '93 Workshop Manual (1.6L engine). It states the Crank's Main Journals to be 1.9661 - 1.9667(Out of round .0020 max), the Crankpin Journals to be 1.7693 - 1.7699(Out of round also .0020 max). Dims are in inches.

Can someone confirm that B. is also correct for a '95-'97 motor?

Thanks,

Check Mazdaspeed, I thought they had all the FSM's online.

You taking this to Brinkley? If so, get it in writing what they are doing

Brinkley is real proud of his work. I'm not encouraged to provide return patronage his way. There's a guy off of Firetower Rd - TAZ Racing Engines. The guys at Top Speed recommended him. I'll probably call both and get a quote.

Steve - my crank will be shinier than yours. :D

Both fronts are.

I think the roof scoop is backwards, perhaps this is RSM (Reverse Spec Miata).

i had a head resurfaced at brinkley's and didnt have any problems with them, they were super fast and well priced. it was done the after i dropped it off and it only cost me around 60 bucks. chris did say that the guy at TAZ knows his stuff but he also said it has taken a long ass time to get stuff back from him.

i'll try to remember to check Alldata tomorrow and get the crank specs for you.

Nothing like a rollin' science project!

The only thing I saw questionable was the lack of a headlight - you can replace them, but delete one? Oh yeah, I think that's the new headlight delete rule, right? ;)

I can't say nuthin' about his backwards hood scoop...I got 3!

So I ended up taking the crank to TAZ (really TAS) Racing Engines. The proprieter, Troy, does work for some of the guys where I work. Hell, he even knew what VIR was! He's a little more than Brinkley, but he said he'd do 3 things; Clean the crank, mic it and polish it (with a repeat mic after polishing) where Brinkley only talked about mic'ing and polishing.

I should be able to get it tomorrow afternoon, but I'll start calling tomorrow a.m. for "encouragement" :) He know's I really need to confirm journal diameters tomorrow a.m. so I can get the right bearings ordered.

I confirmed with Mazda Motorsport today that the 1.6L crank diameters are the same as the 1.8L. Troy also said he has a "crank table" that has all that kind of information.

So this weekend the burnt piston motor (aka The Junkyard Dog) comes out in preparation for re-cranked motor(aka Bad Kahrma) to be reinstalled.

Has anybody changed a motor in a Miata and left the tranny in? I have a scissors type tranny jack I can support the tranny at the bell housing with. The hurdle I see is getting the clutch to line up with input shaft of the transmission. If I could change the motor without removing the transmission, I think it might be a quicker job, provided getting the motor to line up with the tranny doesn't turn into a major hastle. Putting transmissions back in SUX.

Oh gawd! I just saw the hatch in the hardtop. I think either it's some new type of ram air conditioning, or it's a midget escape hatch!

That might be the worst idea that I've ever heard. I'd pull them as a unit. But that's just me.
