I have an opportunity to buy some used hoosier r6s. They have about 6 hours of track time on them and the rain groove is still visable. How much life is left in these tires once the rain groove is gone? This is my first time w/ r-comps and need to know these have some life left in them and I'm not wasting my money on used tires.

Chuck, you out there?

Thanks all!!

Are you looking to autocross these or track them? If autocross, I would punt and find some Kumho 710 take offs. R6's will need a LOT of heat to grip like the A6 cousin. Years ago, in the middle of summer, the old R3S05's used to be a good tire for a two driver car in a ProSolo (due to overheating A3S05's). The new A6/R6 compounds are even farther apart then back then, so autocrossing on them wouldn't be fun. - AB

Rodney, it's just autocross... I would find the oldest, cheapest, crustiest tires you can find.

yes, primarily for autox. Maybe an HPDE at the end of the year after the cruise. I was wondering about the heat thing...

I was thinking about some sears specials and running a 185/75-17. I think that would be a great tire.... for you. :car:

Save your money on both counts. The R6's will not work well for AX (as Aaron stated) and I would be very hesitant going on track with a used set of r-compounds. On an AX course, you might be buffing out a cone mark when over step the limitations of used tires. On track, you will be doing more than just buffing.

There is a reason you can get them cheap, they are past their prime. No one throws out decent tires. From what I know, six hours is a lot of heat cycles on the Hoosiers. If they have been sitting around for a while...even worse. I am sure there are some RR Hoosier drivers that provide better insight, since I am a Toyo driver.

If you are thinking about taking your car out on HPDE, simply get a decent set of street tires to start off with. Randy Melton and I both ran the Sumitomo tires. At $70 a piece, they are hard to beat.

I'm going to disagree on the used tire route (for HPDE at least). Last year I bought a set of Hoosier SM6's (basically R6's) from Bowie Gray Jr. that had 5 or 6 heat cycles on them if I remember correctly for roughly $200-250. Those tires lasted me all 5 HPDE's Tarheel ran last year as well as a full day on VIR-F with Asphalt Ventures. Provided conditions were dry and the temps weren't below 50, the grip was never questionable.

Note there is a difference between 6 heat cycles and 6 hours on track...

I have run used R-Compound tires for AX events, but never on track. I feel a lot more comfortable knowing the complete history of my rubber for HPDE's.

I would only feel comfortable selling my extra R's knowing it's going for an AX application... (and the R6's aren't really an AX tire) But I have had a lot of fun dodging cones in my mustang with them on.

The BMW club guys that I help out, who have DEEP pockets, typically go through 2 full sets on a race weekend- non enduro. Its all mental, when they start to feel the grip go away they cull the tires and get new ones.

I then smile and throw them in the back of my toyota!! :D

I run used Hoosier slicks from a Koni Porsche team. Didn't have any issues as CMP nor VIR with them. At the prices I paid, I bought two sets instead of one for less than one set of new NT01s.... and will continue to do so.
