This would be for stock class autocrossing. I'd like a 2004 MR2 as well, but I can get a '99 sport miata for $10-15,000 LESS.

For CSP I'd say get the cheapest, lightest one you can find and put a larger motor in it.

Definitely agree on this one. The 1.8 makes much better torque than the 1.6 (not on big difference on paper, but definitely noticeable when driving.) Besides, motor swaps are tons of fun

I got my '93 with a hardtop for $4500. 73,000 miles. CSP'd it right away with Eibach kit, Tokico's, cat-back, stainless/teflon brake lines, etc. Went to 15" X 7" Konig's, but will probably switch to 13 X 8's next year. Biggest change I could FEEL was the addition of a strut tower brace. Big difference in response to input, and killed the shaky feeling caused by the big front bar.

Regardless of what you buy, I can tell you that they are all very predictable, balanced and can be set up for autocrossing quite easily. Plenty of camber adjustment is available.

My $0.02 worth

As a recent adotper of a 93 (not LE). . . .

Do it.

Even though mine had a less than ideal care record before I got it, I'm pretty impressed in how well it's held up. (Not saying the PO was abusive, just not obsessive.) I got it with 84K on the clock and it hadn't had the timing belt changed yet. Did that and the water pump at the same time. And tires. Drove it for a while. Radiator was a little sketchy so that got replaced along with a clutch recently.

The HDHCSD is a great way to tighten up the backend. It made a huge difference in how the car felt. (And they're fun to install. )

I'd like to drive a 1.8 swap though and see what that's all about. Cough. . Adam?. . . cough.

Car's been a blast to drive and auto-xing it has been a big part of that. Looking to ditch the OEM (as in "installed in Hiroshima in 1992) shocks this winter, buy some Rs, and make the move to ES next year.

I'm not sure what I'm driving.
Maybe an ITR in DS.
Or half-assed STX prepped 330.

The cool thing about the Miatas are that they have non-interference engines, so even if the timing belt brakes, you will do no damage to the engine. - AB

The guys at Sports and Compacts told me that you can do a lot of damage to a Miata engine breaking the timing belt while autocrossing.

They let me know how lucky I was that my belt broke Monday evening and not 24 hours before at the Morrisville event! Even running on RE71 street tires would not have saved the motor :D
