Any recommendations? Malia is looking to do CMP, and we are strongly considering bringing the Miata down in addition to the M3. I'm guessing the Hawk HPS's I've got on there now will probably heat soak rather quickly. I don't expect Malia will be pushing these super hard, but would like to keep the brakes predictable as well, so any experiences appreciated.

i tracked my BMW on Hawk Blues for my first few events. i tried the HP Sports first but didn't really like them. of course big weight variation to a Miata.

I've got hawk blues on the green miata and I've got no complaints. Great stopping power, no fade.

Aren't the Blues the "dust will eat your rims" compound?

Hawk HT-10's have worked great on my Focus (but I have limited selections).

The dust will rust if left on the rims forever, but there's a way around that ...

Dustin, are you guys towing the car down?

If you're towing, I'd say the safe thing to do would be to find out whatever the Spec Miata guys are using these days, and buy a set of whatever that is. Probably not a great street pad though (hence the question about towing).

Hawk HT10's FTW! With the HT10s you can save turning/replacing rotors by replacing the pads when they get about half way worn. You can tell you've gone past half way when ripples start to show in rotors. Some folks will say a new set of rotors is cheaper than changing the pad that soon. However, the pad starts to wear more quickly and about 1/16" past halfway they start going away fast and end up trashing your rotor. I found these guys a couple of weeks ago. They're pretty competitive with the source I've been using the last couple of years. Free shipping.

http://www.rotorsandpads.com/Hawk-Perfo ... S-505.aspx

Hawk Blues dust like mad & chew rotors like crazy right from the get go. If I recall correctly, if their dust gets wet it trashes anything it gets on. It will not come off of wheels.

Performance Friction PF97s trashed rotors for me like Hawk Blues did.

Ferodo DS3000 pads are not only overpriced but SUCK too.

You might want to consider Carbotech XP8 or XP10 pads. They're not bad, the XP10 is similar to the Hawk HT10. The XP8s would be pretty novice friendly plus Carbotech says you can drive to the event on them. Buying from Carbotech directly is expensive, even with the Tarheel discount - you have to pay shipping + NC Tax.

Something like a Carbotech BobCat will leave Malia wanting more braking capacity by the end of her first day. However, something like Bobcats will be fine for the rear rotors. I ran my R package 2 seasons on the same Bobcat rear pads that I autocrossed and drove daily on too.

Most good track pads won't do well under street driving. A) they won't stop worth a crap, B)driving them cold just wears them down faster - tougher on the rotors too.

Guys, this is for a green student.

I would guess that HP+ might would suffice, HPS not so much. BHP's street compound would probably be great as well.

Crap Karl, you bring up a good point I hadn't yet considered. We can only tow one of the cars, so the Miata would likely be driven. So a set of decent, at least moderately streetable pads that will hold up to a green student and get us to and from the event will be highly preferred.

FWIW --- On street tires the Hawk HP+ were fine on my NA Miata even at CMP. They will make all sorts of noises (think train entering a siding) on the street but will work fine.

The Carbotech XP10/XP8 torque delta does help with preventing rear wheel lockup. While my Miata is not my street car, I will drive it back and forth to events on the XP10/XP8 combo. While these pads are lacking in brake torque when cold its not like they don't work.

Net - net is I'd vote for the HP+ , since you have HPS pads on now they should bed fine with the existing rotors.

 I used the old AXXIS pads my first HPDE at Roebling. They were not new and were finished after that event, but they were fine at the speed I went. The spec miata boys use Cobalt pads and the stop real good but they ate brand new rotors in one AX and ONE HPDE at Road Atlanta.

I use Carbotech XP10's and 9's for AX, HPDE and street, but you could probably use 9's and 8's and be fine. They aren't too terribly dusty either like the Hawks.

Dustin, I'd vote for HP+'s or a similar. I ran those for two track seasons before switching to HT-10's. Never had a problem, and they are street-able for the most part. A lot easier to modulate with street tires on the car, as they are not aggressive on initial braking. Also, easy on the rotors, as has been mentioned here.
