Could the turning and slipping issue be realted to motor/trans mounts?

I wouldn't think so. The slippage produces the usual high rev and no go. There is no tire slipping, just tranny. If you get on moderate throttle, it's very noticeable. At least w/ easy throttle, you can get the car around. Once it's in higher gears, you have no issues. Guess my son has to turn left from now on!

Kevin, thanks for the info. At least it's a place to start. I'll contact your recommendations on Monday.

OK, here's what happened so far. I pulled out about 3 quarts of tranny fluid and refilled w/ 2 quarts of valvoline maxlife and 1 quart of lucas stop slip. Drove about 30 miles and it still slips, but found something interesting while driving the back roads. On either a straight take off or a right turn take off from a stop, the tranny slips going from 1-2.

Now what's interesting, is every time I take off from a stop and go left, it's just as tight as it can be, no slips and I can do this consistantly. I think these cars have a viscous coupling for the tranny. And I on to something here or am I still screwed transmission wise?

Comments from you subie owners?

I guess I also need recommendations for a good transmission shop. Rex at happy jap's says he doesn't do trannies.

UPDATE: so here's where I am now. I drained as much of the transmission fluid as I could. Also bought a new filter just to see if that made any difference. Once under the car, I see where someone did a crap job of a previous replacement, no gasket, only silicon and a few odd replacement bolts. After pulling off the pan, the one interesting thing I found was when I unbolted the filter, it just fell out. After inspection, there was no O-ring on the filter. Installed the new filter and O-ring, buttoned up the pan w/ all the correct bolts and added about 5 quarts of Valvoline maxlife dextron and a quart of trans-x as Bret had mentioned.

Drove it down the road and nothing seems wrong, no slips at all. No issues starting left, right, straight, soft starts, hard starts....nothing. Either the Trans-x is a true miracle additive or there were some issues w/ O-ring on the filter allowing the filter not to pick up fluid correctly. The old filter did not look clogged from what I could see. Anyway, the car drives fine and if I can get another 10k out of it before I have to do any more tranny work will be fine.

The lack of a O ring was more than likely the problem. Turning left more than likely sloshed enough fluid over the filter to seal the pick up tube. That problem is probably why the car was put up for sale.
