The sizes are specified as 16x22 and 12x18, which are apparently metric sizes, but I'm certainly not a metric hose expert. For now the path of least resistance is to just reuse my old hoses. My rebuilt rack will be coming in tomorrow and I don't think I'll have time to find a good solution by then.

The old lines are not leaking or anything, I just figured I would do a little preventative maintenance and replace the 20 year old rubber lines while I have the system drained to replace my steering rack. I was hoping for a relatively easy local solution but nothing is jumping out at me.

I suppose that someday if the hoses need to be replaced I'll just suck it up and buy them using the BMW part numbers.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Dominic

Dominic,

yes, the 16x22 and 12x18 measurements refer to the ID (Inside Diameter) and OD (Outside Diameter) of the hoses in millimeters. I can't help much with specific leads in the Durham area- but I would try to find a place that advertises that they make hydraulic hoses on site. A place that repairs tractors or construction equipment would be a good start, and I've seen some NAPA and Carquest locations that make hydraulic hoses as well.

I know you're not looking for the pressure hoses, but.......
FWIW, I've heard that many places that make up hydraulic hoses can make PS pressure hoses for pretty much any car, they just cut out the rubber parts and reuse the ends with new hose crimped in.

Thanks for the info Bret! I figured that the measurements were ID and OD, but it's good to have confirmation.

you can probably find standard sizes that would work too with a hose clamp, 16x22 is close to 5/8 ID (15.875) and 7/8 OD (22.225). 12x18 is close to 1/2" ID (12.7) and 3/4" OD (19.05). The silicone hose they have at Raleigh Rubber and gasket could probably handle the pressure you're dealing with.
