In case you haven't heard about TechShop, there is one scheduled to open in Durham. A pizza party is scheduled on Tuesday, Feb 26th from 7 - 10pm to discuss what will be offered. There will be a question and answer session and you can give your imput as to what you would like to see offered. If you would like to attend the pizza party, you can RSVP here and a space will be reserved for you and the meeting location will be sent to you. They have not scheduled a meeting location yet as they don't know how many will attend.
This looks like a great opportunity, I just wanted to pass it along! :D
Please note that I am not affiliated, yet  Wish me luck!

Hey everyone ~

This thread has gotten a lot of views, so hopefully that means that some of you are coming to the party. It is being held at the Rudino's where the club meets. There's still room for more people, so if you haven't RSVP'd yet, don't wait - the meeting is next Tuesday!

I hope to see some of you there! TechShop sounds like a great resource to have locally, and if we use this opportunity to shape the direction of what's offered, it can only serve us better 8)

back from the dead....

I just checked the techshop website, and it looks like they finally have something going. They say they picked up the keys to the new building in Durham earlier this week- but it's still gonna be ~3 months before they open.

Still, sounds promising.

Yeah, it's happening. Still a few investment spots open if anyone is interested, but they're almost gone. I'm an investor in it.

hmm, I saw that- $25k investment and they pay you back with 10% interest PLUS you get free annual membership.....

Not bad- but what sort of collateral/security do they provide for your investment? Assuming I had $25k buried in some mason jars somewhere, for example.....................

;)

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

Just a note that TechShop is up and running in Durham. They'll have a booth at the Fair, too.

Just an FYI, I teach welding at Techshop.....if some of you folks want me to schedule a class for THSCC members, I could do so. Most likely after the move this month though (Techshop is moving to a new location).

James, I see there's a number of different welding classes - I'd be interested in some MIG instruction, as that's the equipment I already have -- Any details on what you could offer?

My favorite welding technologies are TIG and stick/arc welding, but I do MIG and oxyacet too. Like I said, techshop is doing a major move that may take 3 weeks or more. When that is settled down, hopefully more people will have chimed in (or I'll make a new post). Then I will get an idea of a date/time that will work and have them specially register THSCC participants for a MIG class (only 4 students per class...might be able to convince them to go to 5).

FYI,

The new location is on Glenwood, just a bit south from 540:

8724 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27617

Looks like I'll be deducting a few more miles on Sch. C next year as it is no longer .2 miles from where I work :).

Probably mid February. Like I mentioned, I'll query you guys first and then schedule the class so no one else 'sneaks' in. It'll be 4 people at a time.

Which kind of welding are you interested in?

Nice! That's just a few miles from my house. I'm definitely in for a MIG class.
