But the real question is...

The car is on a conveyor and will it fly if you switch to synthetic?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I'm in the it doesn't matter camp if you switch. I use synthetic in the Miata and the Mazda 6 wagon, and used synthetic blend in the truck. I actually switched to conventional this time in the truck because it was on sale.

I also think the synthetic in the street car is probably overkill, especially since I still change the oil about every 4000 miles, but I need the car to last and I figure it is cheap insurance. Plus, my fund buys EXXON Mobil so I am helping pay for my retirement.

They could be giving that crap away and I would not put into my race car. Too many problems report with people using Mobil 1. Me being one of them. I will spend the extra $3 a quart for Redline. It is a lot cheaper than replacing a motor.

OK, you grabbed my attention Jim.

I used Mobil 1 from mile 1000 with the old GS-R. After countless autocrosses, 50 track weekends, some drag strip passes and lots of hot weather, door to door racing in Honda Challenge, I could still see machining marks on the lobes of the camshafts. That was with Mobil 1, 5W-30.

If I'm honest, the only reason I switched to Motul was that my mechanic when I had the S4 told me it was considerably better So in the interest of keeping the turbos alive on that car, I switched at his recommendation.

Brand preference aside, I look on motor oil in much the same way I look at something like car wax. Yeah, the regular stuff is probably just fine. But I like knowing that I'm giving the car the best it can possibly get. That brings me satisfaction somehow, and I'll pay a few dollars extra per quart for that.

If you run Mobil 1 in street tire class as a novice, the world will asplode. I'm just warning you.

There's some hard-core tech for everyone right there. I'm glad that someone like Jim was able to share some information about the technology of oil and engines for us :?

Mike <-- just trying to help this thread along to 5 pages, heh heh heh

PS - Is Mobil 1 made of 100% gasoline? If so, Heck Yeah!

So some of your racing buddies try to run their engines with the distributor installed 180 degrees out too huh

Did I mention that discussing oil is like discussing religion. Gets nasty real quick. Praise Amsoil, it gave me great protection when I hit the 120lb dog on my bike and also when I was rearended by a 3 ton Pontiac!!

Ok, here is my contribution to get this to over 5 pages...

I know that oil is like religion and politics, that there is always something to discuss and fight about. I don’t know of any real issues with Mobile 1 and will continue to use it in my Hondas.

The only thing I have heard of recently is the new CJ-4/SM formulations. This is because there is a move to reduce the zinc and phosphorus in oils and that means a reduction of the anti-wear additive ZDDP. This means that many oils have been reformulated recently. And that these new formulations have caused premature wear and failure of camshafts that use flat tappets (such as in some Porsches) that really need the protection that the higher levels of ZDDP provided. There are some oils that may be labeled differently (off road use, etc.) that are still able to provide previous levels of ZDDP such as Brad Penn oil.

So much to respond to and so little time right now. Since work is busy and the race season is not far off I will disregard comments from posers, waxers and wanna-bes. Ok, so responses are now narrowed to one or two. :D

First hand knowledge is from tearing apart the bottom end of the motor that let go at VIR. I can explain or you can see for yourself what Mobil 1 turned into. Secondly, is the brown residue that is readily seen on your dip stick. That is the stuff breaking up and leaving the residue

Now for street cars and street class cars, there's probably no problems. I still run it in my truck. But there is a big difference between 2K RPM my truck turns and running a motor at 5-6K for extended periods of time, especially V8's.

The question being brandied about is asking if Mobil 1 has changed their formula. These events are within the past year or so.

To each there own, I would rather spend a few extra bucks on Redline or LE. I may put LE motor oil in as I have run their trans fluid and gear oil.

Wow! I didn't know that moving to wheel to wheel racing made you so much smarter? Is it like staying at a Holiday Inn? :D
