I've been casually looking at 914s, particularly the '73 2.0 since that was the most desirable one in most regards (excepting the 914-6), but I've only seen one semi-original car. Most all of these have been modified in many ways, are rusting (our car was lightly rusting in spots by 1976 with hardly any winter road exposure), or have simply been neglected for decades. Since nobody took them seriously, finding an original car in prime condition seems next to impossible. Hence, I can understand the price appreciation. If I was seriously in the market, I would see paying a good premium for the "right" car.
You can buy one locally for the low, low price of somewhere around $18K
http://www.theaircooledguys.com/Invento ... fault.aspxI would guess a decent 73 or 74 2.0 would be in the $5-7K range. The car above is not concours level, but nearly so and is in Raleigh. Even then it was originally a 1.8 that was converted to a 2.0. Spending more to get a nice car is the right thing to do. I could have started with a nicer car for my project, but I knew going in that I was going to strip it down to bare metal, so some of that value would have been wasted. Regarding the rust, they all have it. It is just a question of how much. Hopefully when I will be done, mine will be 99% rust free.

As a datapoint, it took fully prep's 914-6's to be competitive in A Stock and ASP against a stock in AS or almost stock in ASP 1.6 liter Lotus Europa with 116 HP, 1700 lbs, and 13 x 5.5 wheels. I'm not sure the Europa in similar trim would keep up with a well prep'd Miata these days.

In S, SP form a 914-4 or 914-6 is not competitive. It might do well locally. When compared to modern cars, it's main advantage is weight. Otherwise a Honda Civic is going to probably have just as good or better stock suspension design. Which is why mine will be far from stock! Just add bigger motor and bigger tires and have fun!
And I probably could fall in love with a Europa as well, but I am trying to keep my obsessions limited at the moment.
