I'd like to get a track-approved camera setup before next weekend.

I saw a post here or another forum with a setup that attached to the headrest posts, and wasn't very expensive.

Would this be legal for track events? Does anyone know what mount I'm thinking of? My forum searches are turning up nothing.

I have this. I'm happy enough with it.

you can make one like thisyour own pretty cheaply...i'm not sure what is considered track approved, but as long as it is securely mounted and tethered, i think it would pass.

go pick up the cheapest tri pod you can find for your camera...that will give you the mount...then you'll need:

square tubing
u-bolts
wing nuts (or whatever)
washers
end caps for the squre tubing

measure out were you want the camera and where the u-bolts should go on your headrest posts...drill to attach the u-bolts. you might also want to put some sort of covering on the bolts too...i used surgical tubing. this keeps it a bit more solid.

then attach the tri pot mount to the tubing. not sure what to use for tethering.

Guessing that since they list no price for this that it is one of those "if you have to ask" situations....

Um, do you see that item listed there? Because I do not.

I'm going to call to order the headrest mount - I'll ask about the Corvette mount if you're interested.

You don't want that seat cover mount Les. It won't stay still for AX worth a damn. You'd be better off duct taping the camera to your helmet (I'm not suggesting you do that btw) ;-)

A helmet cam can be very useful for autocross. Shows where you're looking, which is an important part of learning how to get faster. A stationary cam that has your head in the field of view is almost as good since you generally turn your head where you are looking, but it can be harder in some cars to have one camera setup that does that.

Using a camcorder can preclude this approach, but if use a bullet cam plugged into a recording device (which can still be a camcorder) then you can do it. Chasecam sells a helmet mount for their bullet cams that just uses velcro to attach to the helmet and it works great. For autocross I'd put it on the right side of my helmet and I think it would work fine (I've only used it for karting where I put it on top since I have a multiplexer and when I use video for autocross I generally use two cameras...one on the roof and one inside pointed at me).

For some reason Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" just popped into my head. :D

Donnie's advice is very good. I think having yourself somewhere in the view is invaluable. If you can manage it, at least try to get your arms and part of your right leg in the view. In addition to learning that I have a sexy leg , I've learned a bunch about my own driving by just watching my inputs this year.

Now. I've had mine for a little while, but I don't think I paid that much for it.

Do you have the single-seat mount or the double seat mount? I'm curious to know if the double mount requires you to have both seats in the same position. For me, someone who sits right up in the dash, it prevents others from riding with me.

Single seat mount. I know some people have complained about vibration, I haven't had the issue, but I just figured if I did, I'd move it to the drivers side and let my "ballast" even it out.
