I'm about to replace my original exhaust. There are several leaks and there maybe leaks in the downpipe, I'm not sure yet. I've looked over the SCCA rule book for restrictions:
Quote:
Any part of the exhaust system beyond (downstream from) the
header/manifold or catalytic converter, if so equipped, may be
substituted provided the system meets the requirements of 3.5.
Stainless steel heat exchangers are permitted only if the physical
dimensions and configuration remain unchanged.

Since the downpipe is between the header and the catalytic converter, what are my options for replacement? Do I have to have an OEM downpipe (unbelievibly expensive), or can I use a non-OEM one of the same diameter, or something else? I guess the other option is to try to patch any leaks, but I'm not sure how successful that would be.

You got it.

Alternatively, fix it with a stock-type replacement and keep your mouth shut. I don't think anyone around here would care, however it keeps the heated debates to a minimum if we don't talk about it :)

Unless the downpipe is rusted, you could patch it pretty easily. I would think that if the car has a flex pipe, that might be the culprit. - AB

You may want to try searching some of the 240 forums. I'd imagine that all those converted turbo guys won't have much use for the stock unit.

^Yeah, I have seen a few on the forums and I will do that if it can't be patched. I hope to take it to a shop next week.

It ended up being a crack nearly all the way around the catalytic converter at the inlet. The shop was able to patch about 90%, so that is good enough for me.

Cool deal. Glad you got it fixed, hopefully relatively cheaply. See you on the weekend. - AB
