Where would I find some decent quality aluminum stock. 6061-T6 would be nice. Soft, junk stock would not.

1 needs to be 1/4" thick, 4" x 4" angle type, 24" long.
The other needs to be 1/4" thick, flat, 6" wide x 8" high.

Graham,

You are lucky. I just went through the PITA of looking for a decent aluminum stock supplier. Looks like I have a source for the first item.

I'm not sure that you will be able to find a 6"x8" aluminum angle stock in small quantity. You may need to special order that from an aluminum extrusion company and I think they generally only deal in 12-24 foot lengths.

You could get some 1/4" plate and have it cut and welded but 1/4" will take a hefty welder. Mine is 185 amps and _might_ fully penetrate 1/4" if I pre-heated and pray for a nice and stable arc...

Anyhow, here's my short list of suppliers...

Also (more expensive for the tubing I wanted):
onlinemetals.com
metalsdepot.com

Thanks Ashraf. I just got a few feet of Sceet tubing to redo my brake ducts. Didn't even think to look at the rest of the site for aluminum stock. They have what I need, but it's pricey.

Check with Dennis Shaw, Krause & England, or McNair. They are likely to know the suppliers of "quality" metal.

theres also:

they specialize in T-slot extrustions, but have a bunch of other extruded profiles as well that you can get in whatever lengths you want.

Here's their other shapes:

not what you are looking for but i can generally get some 6061 t6 angle, and channel, or 5052 h23 sheet. if its drop i get it for scrap value, wich is dirt cheap. and i can cut it to size. mostly the sheets run .125,.190 so kinda thick.

just lemme know and i can bring it to any rally event since i am in wilmington.

Graham, if you don't have luck on the 6x8" piece let me know and I'll ask on the local rally mailing list. 6061 is the most common skib plate alloy, and some folks might have some pieces left over.

Thanks guys. Here is what I'm trying to do. I need to make custom race seat mounts. I want to use aluminum instead of steel. So I need relatively good quality. It will all be held together with Grade 8 bolts. I'm also trying to avoid any welding in the base.

Their are a bunch of universal mounts out there but the problems are the rails are too short to make it from front to rear bolt. I need 24-28" of length on the L bar stock. Might be able to use 4" side with 2" base. Then those blocks of 6"x8" were just a guess on what I need for the side to attach to the rail and the seat.

Here is an example of what I'm trying to reproduce. I'd just buy this kit but his costs have too much "Corvette Tax" included.

all i have on hand for angle is 2x2 and 2x2.5

i do have c4 channel wich you may be able to modify to work, all this structural is 1/4" thick

as for the bar stock i dont have any i have some sheet and some plate, up to 1/4" thick but its pretty soft.

let me know if you need any and what sizes i can get all that stuff in drop so it would be whatever the scrap value is, at a guess i would say at least $5

but i dont know if you can use 1/4" its aluminum but that thick stuff starts to add up

wait i see some 1/2" plate about 8"square....... tell me if your interested in this 5052. and i can get small stuff welded no prob fyi (mig only)

If it is just for the instructor/passenger it doesn't have to be that thick.
