I'm having trouble getting a transmission back on a '88 CRX Si and I was wondering if there was anybody in the Durham area that might be able to help? I injured my left hand a while back and I was hoping I would be able to deal with the tranny by now. Well, after trying to pick it up for less than 30 seconds today, it's clear I can't hold it without serious pain. It definitely takes some muscle as anybody that has ever wrestled with one of these things can attest to so it would help if you had a strong back.

The crazy part is that I did this same thing last year 6 times over the period of 2 weeks and now I can't get one in the period of a couple of months. Did I ever mention I hate cars?

Any takers? I can reimburse you for your time with beer, money or free data logging. :D I'm right near South Point mall and I can be around whenever is convenient.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

I work until 6:00, but after that I should be able to help. If you have enough light, I can come by after Meghan goes to bed (8:00) and my whole family will be happy.

I also have a harbor freight transmission jack that is good for taking much of the load.

Another tip I read...

Get some long bolts that match the bell housing to block bolts, cut the bolts heads off. Screw them into the block and use them as guide pins for sliding things together.

Most of my tranny work has shown that the "guide pin" method will be difficult due to space constraints.

That would be awesome Scott. I have 3 500W work lights but it will be outside. I did a couple of the transmission jobs last year at night so it shouldn't be a problem.

I've been using my (crappy) floor jack to take some of the weight but your tranny jack might be more stable. It really depends on how tall it is since I'm working on jackstands and there probably isn't more than ~20" clearance under the tranny.

Should I give you a call @ 8? If tomorrow or another day would work better, that's cool with me too.

Thanks a bunch!

Jim

Don't call at 8:00!! That's how little girls don't fall asleep.

PM me your number and I'll call you, alternatively, call my cell phone 949-8780 and I'll just set it to vibrate mode.

Big thanks to Scott who came over last night to help out with the transmission! While we didn't get it bolted on, we did discover I messed up the splines on the clutch as some point. I'm guessing that was when I tried to get it ready before the first RallyX in a big hurry. Oops.

I got a $20 parts store replacement this morning and managed to slide the transmission with little trouble but lots of pain. Luckily it took no more than a minute this time so it wasn't too bad. I did notice that the part store clutch's splines were a fair bit looser on my clutch tool compared to the used ACT clutch I managed to destroy.

Ryan and I have a lot in common sometimes. I'm usually just a lot better at keeping it quiet. :D

Jim
- who as soon as the feeling returns in his hand needs to fix the ball joint he destroyed trying to remove the transmission

Glad it went back together. Give me a ring if you need a hand with anything else.
