Donnie,

It might be worth giving Mark at Ground Control a call. He's their STi 'expert', drives an '04 STi. GC offers custom built strut housings for Koni inserts that fit '04 STi (but for 2.5" springs, not Stock legal) - maybe they can build you similar housings to fit an '05, but with 'stock' lower spring perches instead of their usual tabs for height adjustable 2.5" springs.

This may be a stupid question... but:

- Why not wield the stock low spring perch to the threaded sleeve, and use that on a GC threaded body?

Would that work?

Welding steel to aluminum is not trivial or in most cases even doable.

You can do a custom spring perch, yeah. It can be a bit of a pain to cut the old one off a set of struts (and obviously demolishes a set of struts in the process), but it can be done. Koni said they actually chuck the entire strut in a lathe and "turn" original perches off to get a nice cut, so in theory you could take them to any good machine shop to have that done.

That's assuming the GC can use the stock top hat, too, and has *exactly* the same mounting on the lower end (ie. doesn't allow for more camber or anything). None of which I know for sure, but it's worth investigating.

As for the welding, well, you would just need to come up with a properly sized piece of steel tubing and weld to that, then slide over shock body and set to the proper stock height.

If GC can make you housings w/stock lower perch, Koni inserts would just drop in, meaning the GC housing has no impact on fitment of the top hat. You would use Koni inserts for late model WRX, which fit the stock STi top hats. And GC's standard housing for STi matches stock lower mount geometry, so no issue there. (Of course, they can also do custom stuff on the lower mount for different kingpin angle - more or less camber - but you'd just want the standard lower mount to match the stock strut geometry to meet Stock class rules.)

As mentioned, a quick call to Mark at GC ((530)677-8600) would get you the answers, and I suspect the price will be pretty reasonable (since their custom-built WRX housings for coilovers are pretty inexpensive), assuming they can weld up some stock lower spring perches for you.

Pftt... never... maybe a MORE POWERFUL STi... but I have no allusions of ever wanting a Honda that isn't bought for some form of racing.

Now, and ESX STi... that would be interesting.... ( http://www.esxmotorsports.com/ )

I think I have more than enough for me to chew on atm. I haven't seen TOO many 05 STis for sale, but I do know Tom Hoppe's old ride IS for sale [05 T2 STi] ;)

Yeah, I don't really think I want one with a cage in it for autocross use. Just a hunch. :)

That car, judging from the pictures I've seen as well as most everyone else, is absolutely badass. Unfortunately, it's a stretch from daily driving material though. :(

Okay, another related question.

Anyone know of any wheels on the market any lighter than the stock wheels in 17x8 with the proper bolt pattern? Would prefer a 46 or 47mm offset, but anything up to 53mm will do (and I'd just use spacers). Also, does anyone sell spacers for this bolt pattern already?

Just weighed one of the stock wheels I got from Brian Herring (thanks, Brian!) and they are something between 19 and 19.5 pounds (my shipping scales only do half pound increments and one said 19.5 and one 19.0). That appears to be pretty good as the Wedsport wheels are apparently the lightest wheel Tire Rack has in that size and they are 20.8 pounds!

I know had I decided about staying serious about STU, I was looking into some 5zigen fn01r-c's. I believe they are lighter than stock, and come in a +48 offset. I would have to be at home so I could pull up some weight measurements, but I believe they were a good choice for price/weight. YMMV.

If I find a link, I will post it up later, but hopefully that will give you a starting point... good luck!

It doesn't appear they are too much lighter at a 17x8.

IIRC, there were 17x8 OZ Superleggera's at one point in a 48mm offset that were around 17.5-18#. Is the '05 STi bolt pattern 5x100? - AB
