Okay, I know there are a few threads on the topic of tires, but since I'm just moving into race tires I'm looking for you to tell me that I've figured it out and know what I'm doing. On the off chance that I'm wrong just post your opinion here. Feel free to refer me to a link with all of my questions answered.

Picking up new 13x8's for the Miata this week. I'm deciding on tires for this. With new koni's and GC's, I hope to make it from the back of the CSP class to mid range (well, to be honest, I want to take the lead, but the nut behind the wheel is still a bit lose)

I was told, from a call to a leading tire supplier that we all use, that the Khumo's were more of a great tire with a shorter life, that the Hoosier A's were a better choice since my two sons and I will be running the car in autocrosses and they'd hold up better, that the R's were basically the same, but would work for both track use and autocross. (note they don't have the A3S04's in 13's)

Since the Hoosier R3S04's are at $76 a piece right now, would I go wrong in getting these as my first race tires?

Keep in mind that this is coming from an Azenis' user...

I thought that the conventional wisdom said that the Khumo V710 was a longer lasting R comp than the Hoosier, but that the Hoosier may be a tad stickier.

I would think that if you had multiple drivers in the car that you would want the longer lasting of the two. Unless funds are unlimited, of course.

My $.02

I have been told by a National Event winner (who will chime in Im sure) that the A3S04 is crap. Dunno about the R3S04.

I run the 215/50/13 V710 and it is quite honestly the most amazing tire I have ever drove on.

V710's or new A6's if you wanna be a contenda

V700 or R3SO? if you want long life.

First I ever heard anyone call a Hoosier A a long lasting tire compared to a Kumho, even the V710. I have a fresh set of the new A6's mounted on my wheels now, but haven't run on them so I have no experience. I was very happy with the wear and performance of the V710s I ran last year. But you *must* keep them cool with a sprayer, especially with two drivers. They will need to be sprayed after every run in the warmer months.

The big dissadvantage of the V710 over the Hoosier is sizing. Kumho seems to be a little ignorant when it comes to size offerings. In 13" sizes, they only offer a 215 section width tire, while this is a wide 215, it is not as wide as the Hoosier 225 that is offered in the 13" size. My 225/45/15 Hoosier A6s are nearly 10 inches wide, more like a 255 than a 225...

I took the cheap route this time and got the R3S04's 225/50/13. Mounted them on Rota RB wheels.
The tire guy, tried a new shop since the alignment guy didn't impress me at my regular shop, had one hell of a time mounting these. Is this normal? He said that the stiff sidewalls were the cause of his troubles. He ended up scuffing my new wheels :x . Not a big deal since they're not street bling, but still annoying.

Find a new tire guy with more skills or a better machine. I haven't personally mounted that size, but damn. I've stuffed tires with much smaller sidewalls on much narrower rims (like 225/45/15's on 6" rims, 295/30/18's on 9" rims, etc).

Also, a stiff sidewall on a tire shouldn't do anything that causes you to scuff a wheel. A stiff sidewall on a narrow rim will make it very difficult to get a bead to set, but that's about it.

No, I'm not for hire for tire mounting, either. ;)

c'mon, be a sport. actually it wasn't my first choice for a shop to mount them, but I figured it's a tire and they seemed like guys that were, well.... less dealership and more race kind of guys. I won't be taking anything back there and I'm still looking for a solid shop in Pinehurst, so if anybody has a line for me, let me know.

Tire Store Rule #1
Most tire stores suck. Usually the guy mounting them is a step up from "Do you want fries with that?"

Colon.

My suggestion is to bring your wheels and tires up to Cary. Mark at Hubcap Heaven has TONS of experience mounting race tires and if he can't do it then you know it can't be done.

FWIW, my tire guy hates when I bring race tires for him to mount. The stiff sidewalls are the culprit, but hey...that's what he get's paid for. He's never suffed any of my wheels though since he used to dealing with nice wheels his normal customers roll on....EX-PEN-SIVE 24's yo!

Yeah, but I'm used to it. Most students would start calling me that after a few weeks when I was an instructor in the Navy.

annoyance #2, my lug nuts won't fit inside the Rota's. Well, the lug nuts fit, but you'd never get a socket over them. I didn't even think about lug nuts. :banghead: I had to pick up some 'tuner' lug nuts (locking) at AutoZone.

Colin, you need some of these . I ran the "tuner" lugs for awhile, but was leary of the quality. The McGuards are top notch quality.
