I have a buddy with a 2003 Corvette that needs new tires and he wanted advice on what brand to get. Any experiences/recommendations welcomed.

He just drives on the street - no Auto-X or track events (although trying to get him to lend me the car!)

Cheers, Mark

Hmmm... It depends...

Does he want runflats? Lower cost? Could care less about cost?
I don't do runflats so I couldn't help you there. But regular tires. For a daily driver.

Real Expensive:
Goodyear F1 SC
Michelin Pilot Sports PS2

Expensive:
Goodyear F1 GS D3
Kumho MX

Reasonable
Firestone Wide Oval
Toyo Proxies T1R
Falken FK451

The most popular tire with the C5 crowd seems to be the Kumho MX. Next would be the Goodyear F1 GS D3. If I had to pick I would take the Goodyears over Kumho. I just don't like Kumho MX. You can take either of these tires and drive street/autox/track and dry/wet. The GY are quieter.

The GY F1 SC comes stock on the Z06. They are great in the dry and make excellent track tires if you have to run street tires. The Michelin PS2 are also rated very highly and do better in the wet. Both of these are expensive and wear pretty fast. But I love the F1 SC tires anyway. I have 2 sets. I get them used for cheap.

On a budget I would look at the Firestone Wide Oval. I run these for street tires and they may become wet track tires. They work well and the price is good. The Toyo Proxies T1R are a little more expensive. Some C5 owners run them, but not many. For real cheap the Falken FK451 would work. They don't have the Z06 size or I would have gotten a set for daily driving and possibly track thrashing.

All of these tires can be found at Tire Rack or Discount Tire Direct. Those are the best prices I could find. You could also look at Frisby Race Tire, Vulcan Tire, Edge Racing.

There are other choices but that is what I narrowed the field down to when I went hunting.

Coming from another C5 owner I'll agree with what Graham has said above. Those are all good tires. You didn't specify model so I don't know if it is a Z06 or regular C5. If it is a regular C5 and they want to stay with runflat tires get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZP. Those tires are far superior to the Goodyear Runcraps installed at the factory.

my input....

Kumho Ecsta MX's. Great tire for the money. Also, they now make a runflat version for those people that still want the security of the runflat.

Although, right now... I have no street tires for my vette. :) Just a couple very large stacks of V710s!

Appreciate all the advice - I'll forward on and he can make the decision. I know he wants run flats....so he's gonna have to dig a little deeper in his pockets.....

Cheers, Mark

Yeah but if you stack one set of Z06 tires they're pretty big all by themselves. I've got 2 sets of SC(s) stacked in a closet in the garage. Now I only have room for one more set...

That's what I'm talking about. He has 4 stacks of Z06 tires. When Tirerack runs short on V710s for a Corvette Z06 they don't call Khumo, they call Adam!!!! :D

and Todd... those four stacks are not mounted. I have two sets mounted right now as well. :) But, they are not new tires in the stacks, they are only good for local events or EVO schools now.
