The rear rotors on the Miata lasted 114K. And I got to use an angle grinder to remove the lip on either side of them so I could get the caliper off.

Sparks=cool.

Oh, yeah - and the cheapest rotors I've found are about $750 for a set of 4.

Ho. Lee. Crap.

Can we put to rest the "BMW parts are expensive" myth? I think I'll be striking the STi off my list of cars to own just based on that.

M3 rotor prices from http://www.ultimategarage.com/brakeprc.html
BRAKE ROTOR-FRONT LEFT (95-99) (Brembo or Zimmerman) 60.00
BRAKE ROTOR-FRONT RIGHT (95-99) (Brembo or Zimmerman) 60.00
BRAKE ROTOR-REAR LEFT (95-99) (Balo) 64.00
BRAKE ROTOR-REAR RIGHT (95-99) (Balo) 64.00

In fact, many people recommend replacing only pads OR rotors- not both at the same time.

Interesting - I've never heard that before. I'd like to understand the logic behind this recommendation - any explanation?

I've always replaced or resurfaced rotors when installing new pads, based on the belief that a used/grooved rotor cuts unevenly into a new set of pads, resulting in pads wearing out prematurely, as well as brake squeal.

Marcus,

Not sure if you know this - it definitely surprised me to find out - if your STi is still under the original 3 year/36kmi warranty, the dealer will replace worn brake pads for free. Same with wiper blades and clutch linings, assuming the wear isn't deemed to be the result of racing (we won't tell).

Check it out at:

I have 49k on mine. I guess I am easy on the brakes.

Same here Keith... Maybe the the people that believe this don't understand how to burnish brakes? - AB

Marcus - where did you find the $550/set rotors?

I'm working on going to the smaller brakes (like are on the 06 WRX), but I have been known to change my mind...

Just because the parts of one car are less expensive than another does not preclude the first car from being expensive.

I always found BMW brake prices to be reasonable. I used to get real ATE front rotors for $25 each, often cheaper than the questionable asian stuff for other cars. The suspension components, on the other hand were obscene, particularly when you consider how short lived they are. I have 87,000 miles, of which 3,500 are on track on the original balljoints of my lowly Ford and Mark V noticed at the tech inspection that they are as tight as new. I never got half that with my e30 and it had less weight on the front end. Consider that the whole control arm is less than $50 each with bushing and you can actually replace just the balljoints for $16 each and that is a factor of 10 savings. The driveline on a BMW is also where they rape you. Internal engine components? Forget it. You can buy a set of forged V8 pistons for less than a set of 4 crappy cast factory BMW units. BMWs are no categorically expensive like some other brands and many of the regular wear items are surporisingly cheap, but there are some parts where Broke My Wallet can certainly apply.

It still doesn't stop me from wanting an M Coupe really badly.

Marcus,

Just view this as an opportunity to go to lite weight rotors to shave some lbs off of each corner :)

Marcus,

Take a look at these guys before you go spending $500-$700 for rotors.

http://www.wholesaledirectparts.com/

They do have rotors for most cars and are pushing Axxis pads big time!

Right now they have a GP going on for the C5 owners that is just ridiculous. And they will give us a 1 year warranty on the rotors even if we track the cars...

They're not the fastest on delivery so don't expect them in 3 days, more like 2 weeks. But that is because they are selling so much they can't keep up....

Graham

Its not, I have talked with several people about this in the braking industry and as long as you bed the new pads in you can replace new pads on new rotors or freshly turned rotors.

I have to say $500 is ridiculous for a set of rotors; I could get 5 sets of (front and rear) rotors for the Del sol or the Integra for that price.
