When these are installed, are they a suitable replacement for the oem hood latch? Or are they best used as supplements to that latch?

Jason,

I have no problems on the track using hood pins with hood latch mechanism totally removed. However, if you park the car on the street it would make your engine bay more accessible to thieving low-lifes.

Cheers, Mark

They're suitable to replace the OEM latch. But, you may still want to leave the catch latch (or whatever the term is for the thing you have to reach under the hood to release), as hood pins are awfully easy to forget to latch before heading out on track...

In SCCA ProRally, it's actually _required_ (except for stock class) that you remove/disable the stock hood latch. So nearly every Prorally car you'll see has no hood latch. That should speak to any issue of "is it a sufficiently strong replacement".

As far as forgetting the hood pins before you go out on track, well, you'll only do that _once_. ;)

They have locking ones now that have a low profile too. Use a round key like on a bike lock. I saw them once, don't know where or how to get them though.

My hood has the hinges in the front, should I still use hood pins?

I didn't have the hood latched once on the way to work and at about 60 mph there is enough air going into the engine bay that the hood starts to lift up. I assume at some point it will set back down when it grabs enough air, but I opted to keep it below 60 and not find out.

Saw a GT class Porsche at LeMans do that this year. As he was pulling out of the pits the front cover (not really a hood since the engine is in the back, I guess) flew up and smacked the windshield. The driver, obviously not wanting to go down many laps waitiing for a tow, decided to open the door and ride all the way around the course with his butt on the door bars so he could get his head out to see. He was surprisingly fast and didn't lose a lap.
