yeh well i am 6' 3.5" :) doctor measured me a few months ago. hah

everyday when i drive it in my hair touches the headliner and gets all staticy. so its close. w/ the helmet i couldnt get it under the non sunroof part at all. like period. and then it rubbed w/ my head tilted in the sunroof hole. so not so good.

i might look into trying to take some seat padding out though or something. dunno :/

I'd say that if Dan needs more headroom, he needs more headroom. Otherwise, that first big bump might send him to the hospital to get some vertebrae fused... which could also solve the problem :)

Dan, have you measured your headroom (with helmet) while strapped in with your race harness? Mine tends to pull me down a bit into the seat.

ohhhh, how I can relate to this thread. At 6'-4, I looked at all sort of cars before buying my '96 328 4 door. It's amazing what I can't fit in. You can also throw in the frustation of being tall in the upper body, and head room becomes a premium. When I drive w/ the helmet on, the back of the seat goes waaayyy back.

I was curious about a different angle on this problem. I'm seriously looking for another helmet that might be slightly smaller (less thick) than that big a$$ pumpkin I'm putting on my head right now.

Anybody have the word on good helmets that may be slightly thinner in the padding area?

tall minds what to know....

:D At 6'-5", 260 lbs and size 13 shoe I am in the same boat. At my size it is not what I like, but what I will fit into. Cars, clothes and shoes.

Any sunroof I have seen eats into the headroom. I just will not buy a car that has a sunroof because of this. "Some" are wide enough that the center of my head will fit into the sunroof area. And this is without a helmet.

People at work ask how I fit into such small cars. My Civic has tons of headroom. I can wear my helmet and it just touchs the top. When I had the Del Sol years ago, it was the same way. With the 914, you would think I have the same problem. But when they don't try to cram two extra seats in the back, that you actualy can get decent leg room.

My 914 problem is making me + helmet < rollbar.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

yeh, the R32 was fine and it had a sunroof, too. maybe it was the pretty low sport seats it had.

well i just ordered two new seats (Corbeau CR1s). they only sell corbeaus in pairs so that answered that question. luckily i had a bimmerforums coupon code for 10% off and found used bracketry cheap. the coupon is good into march if anyone is interested. its through Apexperformance.net and i must say i've been on and off the phone w/ those guys for days and they've been top notch in service. i had some crazy questions for them and they got up w/ corbeau and got them all answered and back to me very quickly

i also had the seat cushions shaved to free up an additional inch.

At only 6' my helmet hits my T top with my Corbeau seat. I have forgotten the model, but it is higher than my stock seat. It is a good thing that I can take the T's out. I sit really straight up to try to see over the hood and be where I want relative to the steering wheel.
Good luck. With age, you may shrink some. :)

welp got em in. id say theyre a solid inch lower that the stock seats in their lowest position. i also had these seats shaved which is supposed to be good for almost an inch.

so i guess w/o the shave i wouldnt have been much lower than stock so i'm glad i had it done. helmet fits now! it still rubs the top slightly but its GLORIOUS compared to how it was. hah.

i drove to work today and for the first time ever in this car my hair isnt all staticy and standing straight up.

Dan, you still looking for seats? Check out Tom Bishop at Auto Sport Gallery in north raleigh, actually, he's just across the street from Charles Frank Goldsmith. Last time I was there, he had about 4-5 seats on display for folks to test fit.

I was there yesterday picking up a pair of Speedbleeders. He had some Corbeau reclining aftermarket seats on sale for $799 each FWIW.

Being somewhat vertically challenged, I got no headroom issue :)

FWIW, Frank Catena and I bought Momo Start seats from LTB in Florida for <$250 each, no tax, and free shipping. FIA-approved for Time Trials, and they mount about 1/2" above the floorpan using the stock Miata sliders.

These are fibreglass shell seats, with molded-in attachment nut-serts for mounting. Excellent support, but a little tighter than the Corbeaus. Probably not the choice unless your car is dedicated to comp., but I've had no issues with taller HPDE instructors.

If you are considering doing track events, you might consider "shell"-type race seats to facilitate rear bracing in the event it becomes a requirement in the future. Tubular constructed seats would present an engineering adventure in attaching a rear bracing system, IMO.

The adventure is over! This is the setup in my car and it wasn't too difficult to "engineer" IMO.
