Since the headgasket blew on my JDM piece-o-crap engine I decided to scrap it (found headgaskets after a week of searching, but couldn't find new head bolts so easily). I got sick of an engine with "exotic" parts availability, so I decided to sell it off and build a new one that is based on teh US Celica/pickup truck motor.

Not a lot of progress yet, but here is where I am...

Pictures of crap that is for sale or sold:

http://home.earthlink.net/~celica73-2/RG_stuff/

I've sold the short block to a guy in CA. After shipping I will have $325 in my pocket. I had nearly $1000 in the block (just machine shop labor and parts).

I traded the following:
Stock exhaust manifold, new in box oil pan (Toyota), valve cover, special cam timing tool, 2 sets of plug wires and water pump for a set of 44mm Mikuni side drafts and 2 rebuild kits (this will be an upgrade from my pretty crummy 40mm Mikuni's).

I in the process of trading my 9 lb Fidanza flywheel for one just like it, but it will bolt to the new motor.

What I've bought (or will buy this weekend):

1) Adjustable cam gear, $80
2) Cylinder head (used), recent valve job, mild porting, new cam (high lift, obscene duration), enough parts to assemble the head, and a distributor: $80

So, I'm still +$165 on this deal...

I am looking for a '85-95 Toyota 22R right now. If you see one, let me know (has to be '85 or newer).

The engine will be 2.4 liters or bigger (about a 0.3 liter bump in displacement), and should rev to about 7000 rpm (comparable to the old engine), and if this cam works, it should make about 160 hp (conservative), about 20 hp more than the old engine, it will also make about 30 ft-lbs more torque.

It should be about 20 lbs lighter to boot.

Sounds like a winner all the way around.

Hmmm, win some and lose some...

Two weeks ago I went to VA and picked up some parts, the adjustable cam gear and the cylinder head for my new engine (among others).

Now I'm trading the remainder of my "JDM" stuff for pretty much a complete, rebuildable engine (My stuff - 2 cylinder heads - one bare, one complete, 4 cams, 10 head bolts, an engine manual and a few misc parts).

Unfortunately that engine is older than what I was planning to build. So, what does this mean? Well, my cylinder head (specially milled for the newer block I wanted) isn't going to work, and that pimp adjustable cam gear is out too. Looks like I need to sell them off.

The good news is that I got a spare head with the fancy one, and the spare *will* work with the new engine. The new engine also will use a double row timing chain instead of single...

Ahh, details. They never end, do they?

They *do* make actually doing/finishing something so much more satisfying. Plus the internal ego trip you get when other people *talk* about doing stuff, but never do. *grin*

New engine is out on the loading dock. Box#1 is a crankshaft (very clean), box#2 is a block (servicable by the looks of it - it has a few light rust spots in the bores), box#3 is a head (spare) and all the bolt on parts, nuts, bolts, etc. Box 4 is a front cover, oil pump, pistons, etc.

4 boxes, one engine. Got to start building (and decinde how much I want to spend to build it).

I could rebuild it from scratch, balance, blueprint, etc, or jsut bolt it all up and see what it does...

One method will cost about $2000, the other about $100-200.

That's the status of the engine at this point. Pretty much everything has been ordered, I just need the Brown Santa to deliver... (last order was made today).

Here's the teaser:

Update...

Good news:
Cylinder head porting is complete, most parts are in.

Bad news:
Machine shop called today. The block isn't servicable due to a very destroyed thrust bearing surface. I haven't been home to look, but I suspect the crankshaft will be similarly screwed.

Got to find a new block and crank.

Just another update...

Fidanza 9lb flywheel arrived (free), new welded rear diff arrived (not free).

Engine block was ordered from a professional shop, crankshaft is a reman unit from Autozone. Once the block comes in (today or Monday) and I verify the crankshaft is worth a darn then the rotating parts are off for balancing and the head is off for final machining (surface, install oversized valves, 3 angle valve job, tweak rocker arm geometry).

Once that is done, final assembly will commence. Evidently there is a betting pool being started on how long this engine will last.

Put me in for a minimum of 10 track events.

Things are getting close. I picked up the last parts from teh machine shop so I can start assembly. I've also rebuilt the carbs (in progress, one down, one half done).

Once the engine is done, I just need a few junkyard parts to make it bolt in right (and I need an oil pan).

I *almost* could have had this thing done in time for VIR next weekend. Not quite, but almost.

Nice pictures. I'll bet that the tapered ring compressor is pretty sweet. If I could only convince myself that I would be working with any one engine long enough, I'd get some! :)

Love to see some pictures of the car it's going in to, and the engine bay.

Cheers,
Anders

Saw this picture:

I'm wondering how many of these parts were Christmas presents. ;)

Keep meaning to take that tree to Lake Crabtree for some erosion project... I bet my neighbors wish I'd get rid of it too! That picture is only a week old.
