thats a decent read. i think i'm going to try the Amsoil 5w40 Euro. it has the BMW and ACEA A3 certs.. if it doesnt burn up or tick too bad that outta do it. i feel a little better w/ a 5w at startup when its cold, too.
Bringing up this old thread --
I did a bunch of "internet research" over the last few months, a lot of it based on that link. I decided to try a switch from M1 15-50 to M1 0-40 and so far I'm happy with the result. I have decided to stick to off-the-shelf ACEA A3 oils, which means M1 15-50 or 0-40.
With the 0-40, there is less engine noise at cold startup (presumably from the VANOS unit?) and my lifter tick seems to have actually *decreased* compared to 15-50. Could be the age of the oil, however, time will tell.
I may still keep 15-50 in the crankcase for track, not sure yet.
