My '96 328 e36 states to use 15w-40. Since I'm a Castrol fan, I mix 3qts of 10w30 and 3qts of 20w50 to get the magic numbers. I did write Castrol and they did recommend not to mix the oils, but after 50k miles of this mixture and no issue, don't see any reason to stop now. But of course someone out there will try to throw logic my way....

Bringing up this old thread --

I did a bunch of "internet research" over the last few months, a lot of it based on that link. I decided to try a switch from M1 15-50 to M1 0-40 and so far I'm happy with the result. I have decided to stick to off-the-shelf ACEA A3 oils, which means M1 15-50 or 0-40.

With the 0-40, there is less engine noise at cold startup (presumably from the VANOS unit?) and my lifter tick seems to have actually *decreased* compared to 15-50. Could be the age of the oil, however, time will tell.

I may still keep 15-50 in the crankcase for track, not sure yet.
