is there anywhere local that would have hubcentric rings *in stock*? i know a lot of places can order them, but i'd like to get them as quickly as possible.

im gonna call around a little bit tomorrow, but here's what i had in mind (any additions are appreciated):
hubcap heaven
phantasm (?)
tires-n-parts.

thanks.

centerbore is VW fitment (57.1mm i think) and outside diameter is 72-73mm

I should probably never post to this forum :) & I'm always callin' those things the wrong name, but when I bought these street wheels for the MINI so we could use the OEM ones for autoX, they had to have some little space-filler-dealies which Carl calls hubcentric rings. These wheels came from Discount Tire at 55 & High House (Mark wasn't available & I was in a hurry :) ), so you might give them a try if Mark doesn't have em'.

I've never bothered with those things. Am I breaking some kind of rule? Personally, I didn't want the plastic circles to bond to the rotors on track, and if I wasn't using them on track, why would I need them on the street wheels either?

Hum...

ps - stock wheels had AX wheels on them.

There is a reason factory wheels are hubcentric. The hub takes the load, not the studs. They do make them in metal too BTW.

The ones put on my wheels by Discount Tire are metal -- painted pink. :)

Hubs take zero load.

Friction between the wheel and lugnut provided by the stud holds the wheel in place.

Hub centering rings only allow the wheel to be properly aligned with the studs so that the nuts can be torqued down properly, they serve no other purpose.

that's not what tire rack says..

Quote:
With a hubcentric wheel, the lug hardware will not be supporting the weight of the vehicle, all they really do is press the wheel against the hub of the car.

^^agreed. edit: well i was agreeing w/ Wes.. thers no way these crappy plast hub rings can bear any weight..

one time i noticed a vibe in my front wheels and thought i had bent a wheel. i took it off to inspect it and sure enough i was hubringless! so i ordered a new one and it went back to being perfect. so thats my testimony that theyre important for properly aligning the wheel and that they should be used.

my cheaper autox wheels (kosies) have the fibery looking black plastic type and they stay on my wheels pretty well. PJ has some plastic ones on his Fliks that stick to the hub everytime. and then my BBSs have nice metal rings w/ a retaining clip around them. so if your wheels have the groove for a retaining clip, dont forget those too. also putting antiseize on the hub surface is a good idea to prevent rust, wheel/ring sticking, and to give the wheels the freedom they need to move a little as you tighten the lugs

The rest of what The Tire Rack wrote on that page that you cited wrote:
If you have non-hubcentric (lugcentric) wheels, they should be torqued correctly while the vehicle is still off of the ground so they center properly. The weight of the vehicle can push the wheel off-center slightly while you're tightening them down if left on the ground.

most modern cars are not lugcentric, tho. if they were, there would be no need for hubcentric rings...

Wes has enough info on this to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, but there is no need for hubcentric rings on any car as long as you torque the wheels in the proper manner.
