If you can find the caloric content of acetone (or any liquid for that matter) and compare it to that of gasoline that will tell the true story. I may be using the wrong terminology here but the idea is to find the energy content.

As an asside, does everyone notice a drop in gas mileage with the winter blend of gasusing ethanol? I see about 10% drop. Good old EPA says 10% less emissions with it. Hmm, isn't that a wash?

BINGO! give that man a prize... Unfortunately the people that make the rules are politicians not engineers and tend to believe the skewed statistics of their campaign contributors and lobbyists. Besides it's PC to be pro environment even if it's a bunch of hogwash, take the global warming bandwagon as a perfect example.
Back to the acetone in the gas: I wouldn't doubt for a moment that there could be a measurable increase in gas milege right after adding acetone for the same reason dumping in a can of injector cleaner (probably the same acetone major ingredient... ) works. The solvent properties cleans out the fuel passages/injector nozzles. However the benefit would be short lived and not be proportional to the % acetone added.

Fuel injector cleaner is isopropanol, medium weight naphtha, xylenes and detergents. Not acetone.

Thanks Wes. Still primarily solvents, the acetone in the gas would still have similar cleaning properties which could produce some small GM increase. But that's still a maintainance gain not some magical property.
