been running 100 octane and recently both my red plastic ventless cans have begun bleeding black streaks down the front of the cans. is the fuel melting the plastic? and what is this doing to my car as i continue to use these cans? thanks. steve

Steve,

First: Are the cans UL Listed and what brand of can? If they are I MIGHT be able to find somebody at UL (if they haven't been laid off :( ) who would be able to help.

Second: What brand of gas? With 100 Octane I assume racing gas or maybe Avgas.

FYI there have been some issues this year with racing fuel cells having problems with current racing gas if I remember correctly. You might check the fuel cell manufacturer's web sites for possible insights.

Are the cans over filled?

Off topic: What benefit do you think the racing gas is providing?

Yeah, right, Scott.

Steve:
Unless you've jacked up compression to, say, 12:1, there's no good reason to run anything above 93 Octane, IMO.

Save your money for R Rubber! :)

I'm just wondering if they are bleeding around the threads due to pressure in the can. Then, the little trail of evaporating gas starts to pick up dirt, etc.

It could be something in the fuel that's incomaptible with a rubber gasket in the top of the can. If that's the case, then you are kind of SOL ? A different gasket might fix the problem.

these are generic off walmart shelf red cans. i don't think they are overfilled. it is so black i almost think the fuel is reacting with the black plastic cap/tube.

i know all the arguments regarding 100 octane but for seat of the pants reasoning i feel i am getting a slightly better running car.

The red gas cans from WalMart are your problem. Chances are they aren't compatible with whatever octane boosting agents are in the fuel (i.e. dissolving the black plastic cap and causing the staining).

Get some proper racing fuel jugs from Racer Wholesale or somewhere like that (they're about $25 each) and you won't have this problem. Plus they won't bluge like the red ones do.

Steve,
If there is a black streak running down the outside of the can, then there is contamination on the inside also. Even if you can't see it, its there!!! Throw the fuel away or use it elsewhere. Buy an approved can or cans and start from there.
If a contaminent gums up filters, jets, valves or injectors you'll really notice a difference in performance.

Seat of the pants-o-meter not withstanding, higher octane fuel burns SLOWER to reduce preignition. Using it in an engine that doesn't have the compression that would require it actually degrades performance! The most power will be produced by the LOWEST octane fuel that does not knock. Octane boosters in stock engines are the biggest waste of money there is (next to STP and magnets taped to the fuel line). Use whatever octane the manufacturer recommends.

I suppose it's 'legal' to run race gas as a NOV..right? :)

When I used 100 octane and reset my ECU I could swear I felt a difference, but my car is suppose to learn and adjust. I may have to dyno this one day to see if I had the placebo affect going on.

Steve,

We have problems keeping Avgas (100LL) in plastic cans at work. If we HAVE to keep small amounts of Avgas we put it in metal cans for just that reason.

Try a metal fuel can with the spring loaded cap. That way, if the pressure gets too high it just pushes past the cap and nothing blows up. :D
