So, it dawns on me (thanks to my buddy Weird Al) that the Australian-made Mercury Crapri made in the early '90's ('91-94 or so) used the 1.6l Miata engine, just installed transversely. Then it occurs (thanks again AL) that they made an "XR2" version of said Crapri that was turbo'ed.

Anyone know if that XR2 turbo is a bolt-on mod to a 1.6l Miata???? I think I know of an XR2 in a pick-n-pull junkyard........

I dunno about the Capri, but I read somewhere (years back) that the 323 GTX (4WD turbo) was also a 1.6 and a fairly straightforward swap into a Miata. If the Capri has the same motor then it should be similar, I'd think.

Actually, the 323GTX is what the Miata got it's motor from.. hence the low compression and ease of forced induction. The 323 has different intake/exhaust manifolds (obviously) and a different oil pan, but otherwise...

Not sure about the XR2.. sounds worthwhile of investigation though..
