A friend asked me about a problem with the speedometer and odometer on her 99 Legacy wagon: From time to time the speedometer and odometer stop working. Then they start working again. She said the odometer is the mechanical type instead of the electronic/digital type.

Any experience with this kind of problem?

There's a speed sensor in the transmission (it's screwed into the top just below the firewall), but if that was malfunctioning it would turn on the check engine light and the car wouldn't want to go over 4000rpm. I've had that problem - but strangely, the speedometer continued functioning.

Kevin,

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't sound like my friend's problem. BTW - you have to register for that Subaru forum in order to view the post you linked.............. and I can't think of a suitable user name to register under. :) Suggestions?

must be because I linked to a search. I could find some direct links to specific threads & post them here.

for user name, why not "Old McDonald"? :D

The solution to my friend's problem seems to be to order a new speedometer unit.

If I DID sign up for that forum, I'd have to register as "Old Paint" or maybe "Which_way_is_the_glue_factory?".
