A friend has a 02 Celica GT automatic. He needs some new struts to go with his lowering springs(not coilovers) and swaybars. He's a dragracer and sometimes autoxer. His car will soon be forced induction soon so they need to be a strong part. Any Ideas, the car is lowered probly 1.5 to 2 inches. Is there anything available for Celicas in the sub 400 buck range that are made for lowered high rate springs. They don't have to be adjustable, making the car's ride quality better is the prime concern right now.

I would not hesitate to call Ground Control and get their opinion. They sell stuff other than coil overs and are competitively priced. They are not always the MOST authorative, but it is a cheap opinion from a knowledgable source. Note: not all sales people are knowledgeable about all car makes/models; ask them specifically if they are the best person to talk with about your model.

If he lowers the car only 1.5 inches, he can get away with about any strut. If he wants non-adjustable, then going with Bilsteins would be the best choice, but would definitely cost more than sub $400. I'm pretty sure they don't have a set out anyway that would fit (they're currently in pre-production phase for the 7th gen Celica). Another option would be the KYB GR-2's. Decent shock, and fairly cheap. If he lowers the car any more than 1.5 inches, he'll be riding the bumpstops, and regardless of the strut, it won't last long. I'd tell him to save his money and wait for coilovers. Drop springs do just that, drop the car. They rarely actually provide a performance benefit. - AB

TRD and Tokico also have struts available.

If he can afford a supercharger, then he certainly should be able to afford a real set of shocks.

To put the power down he's going to need better springs in the rear anyway (better than the lowering springs he's got). Of course, he will also need a new tranny....
