Ok Randy Melton is building my exhaust this Saturday for the Honduhhh, I am skipping the huge muffler out the back for simple and cheap under car muffler like this one (but with a cat):

I was thinking of using a muffler like this:

It would bolt directly to my cat flange.

What do you think? I worried that it will be too loud but I can always stuff some steel wool in it to tame it down a bit.

In my day those were called glass packs. Loud . . . and probably much more restrictive than a modern low flow muffler.

Well I should have it in hand tomorrow, if it is louder than hell/sounds like crap and the steel wool doesnt tame it down, I am only out $28. I will get it cut out and a bigger muffler put in.

Yeah the popular one was "Cherry Bomb". Like Dick said, glass packs. Calling those things mufflers is a stretch of the imagination.

actually, I got a glass-pack muffler installed at R&J on the 2.5RS last year for rallyx only (too boomy/droney to drive to Laurinburg with it on the car), and it made it MUCH quieter during acceleration. Deepened the exhaust note, too. Only issue was it resonated really bad between 55-70mph. I currently have a no-muffler axle-back that I had on there for the BMW Farm rallyx, and it's extremely loud during acceleration, but it's quieter than the glass-pack muffled exhaust while cruising on the highway.

If you have the option of sliding the pieces together and going through the whole engine speed range before welding it together, you should try that (although it didn't work out perfectly for me, doing it that way at R&J - but I didn't sit in the driver's seat during that part  ).

See I found someone at H-tech that had the same description as yours of the exhaust note on his EF. I think steel wool in a removable exhaust tip will quiet it for the ride to and from events.

Plus you guys have to remember, I ran most of last year with the exhaust coming straight of of the down pipe on my DSM.

Thanks Kevin!

The Dethbunny has a glasspack, and actual CherryBomb on it. It is def not restrictiveat all. Modern ones are a straigh throgh design, you can see from one end to the other, much more of a resonater.

They are loud and do tend to drone tho

Ryan,

If that is a big problem trying to get open flow and hp when you get into it. But wanting low resonance for highway cruising. Consider look at a "turbo muffler". At full throttle they flow almost straight through. At cruising speed they act more like a real muffler and help a lot with resonance. Especially in the 1400-2400rpm range. Been there done that...

Back when your car was new, the hot ticket was a SuperTrapp. It would give you the option of tuning it.

Of course, Oscar White always ran his with no plates to aggravate everybody.

I run my Super trap on the street with no plates. I don't have to call the cat home. All I have to do is drive the 210 around the block and my cat comes home. :)
