Ok, I have stumbled upon a KILLER deal on NEW Koni Yellow Rear shocks for my 88 CRX with the SPSS valving and shortened shafts for $275 Shipped. These shocks will handle ANY spring I can throw at it (1000 lbs or so).

The only problem is they are the remove to adjust kind

The standard valved, external adjustable Koni Yellows are $255 shipped.

Right now, I think I am gonna pass on this SPSS deal, I REALLY dont wanna futz with the remove to adjust Konis unless someone here can convince me to do so.

So what do you guys think?

All I can say is that I certainly like the top adjustment on both the Koni's on my Miata and the AGX's on the CRX. Wouldn't have it any other way given that they see at least 2 adjustments every race day (before and after the event). Of course, I'm on stock springs too, so maybe not as big of a deal for you once you get them in place and tuned.

Short body shocks on the back isn't such a big deal - you stand little chance of bottoming them out running the typical stiff-in-the-back Honda setup. The fronts are another matter...ask me how I know...

How high are you planning to go on springs? The OTS Konis I had on the GS-R handled 500 or so just fine (remember...heavier car as well...). At 600 they were a little overwhelmed but the car was still managable.

An ADVANTAGE of harder to adjust shocks is that you don't mess with them too much. I haven't adjusted my shocks in years. :D

Dick: Yeah, your absolutely right, I REALLY like to mess with stuff. This could be an ADVANTAGE!

Rice: I dont plan on ASTRONOMICAL rates (I would like to keep the rear of the car behind me), the typical Chris Shennefield setup 450F/550r. I have been told that OTS Konis are kinda iffy above 500 ish.

Ryan,

Following up on my shock adjustment comment. Assuming a non stock class and assuming mostly autocrossing on a variety of surfaces/courses/tires, I recommend a relatively soft shock setting (tune balance with springs/bars/alignment). Fine tuning between runs at each site, in my opinion, just adds too much complexity to getting the driver up to the existing limits of the car in 3 or 4 runs except for those rare talents who literally max the car's performance on their first run and can improve the car with an adjustment and then max the new setup on one run. Certainly not me . . . ever. :(

Dick

That was my observation with the GS-R and I imagine the EF shock valiving is similar. I ran my OTS units as high as 600lb rear and the car was a little twitchy in transitions (think the T2-T3 complex at CMP). I drove around it for a year or so and only realized that they were underdamped, even cranked all the way stiff, once I got mine revalved.

Since getting the SPSS goodness I haven't adjusted mine at all. The car handles great, no need to.

I suggest seeing if you can get a hold of Lee Grimes over on honda-tech. He's "CRX Lee" and happens to run the motorsports operation at Koni. Truly one of the "good guys" in the motorsports business.

Oh, one other thing worth mentioning. We learned at the ARRC that if you bring your Konis to the Koni trailer, they'll revalve them on site for $20 a shock. AND you don't have to pay shipping. Something to think about if you ever go to a big, National-type event.
