So in a hunt for a good catch can I emailed Saikou Michi and asked him what the best setup would be, which he responds with

It has to do with the valve cover design. Under heavy turns, the oil will just slosh around and get pulled out of the PCV hose.

I know capping the PCV seems like a no-brainer, but that is modifying the emission routing, and eliminating the best source of vacuum for the fumes in the valve cover.

My personal recommendation would be to get a nice big single OCC, and just detour the PCV hose into that tank.
It will catch the oils, which create the smoke, and still maintain the original routing.

I'll recommend the larger S3-OCC. It would go somewhere with extra space, like the H-frame that holds the stock airbox.
The PCV will just detour into that, and then return to the intake manifold. It would be built with 3/8" OD fittings.


If I don't care about the car being road legal (about to drop the tag and insurance on it anyway) does the PCV have anything to do with engine reliability or longevity?

PCV is just an emissions thing. It stops any crank case vapors from being released to the atmosphere.

Depending on what class you want to run you may or may not be able to remove it. Street touring states that you have to keep your PCV system intact. Street prepared allows you to remove emissions equipment.

I have a no name catch can I bought 5 years ago on eBay for $60 that I've never used. If you want it, make me an offer. I forgot I even had it until I saw this thread.

Just curious, but why do you care if it smokes under that one condition? Is it harmful to the engine?

It can dump a good amount of oil. I just don't like the idea of dumping oil into the intake manifold and then into the intake side of what should be a pretty clean system.

I have an Elite Engineering catch can on the Camaro, it catches a pretty decent amount of oil that would have been building up inside my intake.

It's not really a major issue for my LS3 since it's not direct injected but it can build up quite severely on DI engines who's PCV dumps a good bit of oil vapor into the intake, it winds up building up on valves which have no fuel to clean them off.

As long as it's an indirect injection or fuel is added prior to the valves, and as Chad stated, it's not really an issue. Using a catch can to capture the vapored oil is probably a good idea to keep that oil from entering the valve train in the first place.

No, I added a catch can to it. The catch can just goes between where the PCV system connects into the motor, in my case the lifter valley cover, and where it dumps the vapor back into the intake tract, which on the LS3 is into a port on the throttle body.

It basically just gets plumbed inline, super simple.
