I had a similar dilemma with my front struts

Image

I had the sleeve resting on the tab (in the middle of the pic) on the strut housing but just wasn't comfortable with only that small piece of metal holding the entire weight of my car. Luckily since it was a strut tube, I just took it Keene Fabricating and he welded on another piece of flat stock to the tube to give it more support. Probably over kill but I'm ok with that

Is that bracket strong enough to handle the forces you are about to give it?

It's not sitting on the bracket:

The ledge on the inside of the sleeve is sitting on the ledge on the outside of the shock tube. It should be fine don't you think?

One done with new spring installed. Total price to convert two Bilsteins - just under $150 in parts & shipping.

Now I gotta finish the rear suspension.

As I played around with ride height, I decided I needed more stroke (strut stroke, that is). So I made a few more mods:

Stock strut mount/upper spring perch:

Took it apart:

Modified it to allow the strut tube to pass thru:

Made a new strut mounting plate, added poly bushings:

Raised the strut mount location almost 2". Since the motion ratio is about 0.6, 2" at the strut is 3.3" at the wheel. And yes the hood still closes (barely). We'll be lowering this thing for proper RaceCar cred! :sing:

A rubber bushing? Come on Cash, you can do better than that!!!

Spherical bearing: Because Racecar

Did you make the top plate yourself? Nice work if you did.

Yeah, went with Poly because the strut rod moves very little (besides up/down). The front is double wishbone so the strut doesn't rotate. Nice work on your piece, BTW.

Yeah, made the plate myself. You can still see the green sharpee marks where I traced it onto the second plate.

That pic is not my piece, it was one I was going to copy but I found something OTS that I made work for cheaper.

If that's a strut, I would be afraid that you're going to rip that mount apart.

edit, I see that you say it's a double wishbone, which would make this a shock, not a strut.

True. That mount will not support the weight of the car. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, same as the Fusion, MKZ, Milan, Zephyr - most people don't realize they are DWB.

Image

I added eccentric bushings to raise the back of the upper a-arm after lowering the car. Also added adjustable upper balljoint for more camber

Free rides anytime!
