The secondary air pump went bad on my '98 M3, and a new one is $199. Is this one of those things where an $80 used one would work fine, or is it work it to spend the extra cash for a new one?

Thanks!

What's the part number? Pop it into BMW Morristown's online parts sale site: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214320 They have about the best prices in the country for OEM parts through BMW. It will show you the MSRP along with their discounted price.

I'd go used, but you'll need to by the check valve that mounts to the engine block. That's what destroys the pump in the first place by letting hot moist air back into the pump when it's not needed. Ask me how I know....

What symptoms are you seeing? Mine went bad years ago (also '98 M3). It makes a loud vacuum-cleaner like sound for about a minute after the car starts on cold days. Some mechanic told me it's not urgent to replace it, so I haven't done it yet.

Yup, that's exactly what its doing. I also read it wasn't urgent, but like to keep my daily driver "clean" just so repairs don't pile up.

I've done a search for a "check valve" but there seems to be a bunch of them. Any idea which one is supposed to be paired with the secondary air pump?
