Plugs show lean condition?

I have been consuming a lot of oil on long drives and as a first step to figuring out the cause I pulled the plugs. Some of them were whiter than I am used to seeing- doesn't that indicate a lean condition? These are NGKs with about 1500 miles on them:

From what I understand, any properly running FI car with cats will look a little lean on the plugs. Gone are the days of a slight rich looking plug as normal. Those look great.

Really lean starts showing tan spotting or melted looking electrodes.
