On the advice of my last driving instructor (see video clip below), I decided I needed an LSD in the Mazda6.

I was lucky enough to find a brand new helical LSD (purchased 4yrs ago, but never installed) for $400. :sing:

The tranny is out, new bearings and seals have been ordered and if VK is right, "I'll be kickin' A$$!!"

Congrats. $400 for a new real helical LSD is a deal. Trust me you won't believe the difference it will make!

You will love it. You can actually put power down now rather than waiting for the inside drive wheel to stop spinning. I can't imagine ever going back for spirited driving purposes.

Nice! Did you ever find the ABS issue?

OK tranny gurus! Give me your thought here.

I always check the end play of the gear clusters as they came from the factory before I remove them from the case - call me anal.

So here they are with the tail cover removed:

Image

Basically, you need to measure the height of the gear cluster from the case mating surface; then measure from the case mating surface to the bottom of the well that the cluster fits into. Subtract these two distances and then add a shim to the bottom of the well to get it within spec.

Here's my dial indicator set up:

Image

Zero the Dial indicator:

Image

Carefully move the setup to the case cover. Then measure from case to bottom of well (it still has the stock shim in place from the factory):

Image

Note the dial indicator reads 0.075" (hand moved CCW):

Image

I measured the primary, secondary and reverse clusters at least twice each and got the following:
P: 0.015"
S: 0.075"
R: 0.025"

The shop manual says the end play should be:
P: <0.0024"
S: <0.0024"
R: 0.0016" - 0.0039"

I'm thinking this has got to be a type-o. It has to be off by a decimal point. 24/10,000 is thinner than a sheet of paper! If I am right, it appears P & R are in spec and S is out of spec.

If the manual is right I need a 0.0726" shim for S. I checked the available shim thicknesses with Mazda and the thickest is 0.043". The manual specifically says "use only one shim - do not stack shims"

Wadaya think?

Update:

OK, upon further review, I discovered an error in my measurement of the secondary cluster end-play. The good news - its within spec with the factory installed shim.

Here's the new LSD with ring gear installed and new bearings. Seems the Mazda parts counter is no better that Autozone - they had to order the bearings twice to get the right ones.

Image

The factory shop manual basically says: provide a shim under the bearing such that when combined with the length of the diff, it is 0.0059 to 0.0083” longer than the available space inside the case. This will provide the proper pre-load. After carefully measuring (at least 3 times), I determined we need a 0.015in shim. The factory shim for the old diff is 0.025in - so it is too thick to re-use. Looks like I'm headed to the dealer again.

OK - finally got the right shims, adjusted the diff preload, set the gear clusters back in, assembled the shift forks and we're ready to put the cover back on.

The question is: Can I get the tranny in the car by next weekend?

Apparently YES! DONE! All I can say is LSD=AWESOME!

Not sure what the recommended breakin is for a new LSD - I'm thinking 20 or so Autocross runs then hit the Track!
