I and I think most other CM formula car guys run thermostats.

Here is what my gauge normally looks like going down the road.

Does yours look about the same Matt? With more redline I assume?

I tore into mine tonight. I did indeed find a T-stat in place. I can't tell if it is OEM, but is marked 78 deg C, just like the OEM replacement. Nothing obvious seemed to be wrong with it. As I'm prepping for track, a good flush and T-stat was in order anyways. I still have faith this fixed it though.

New OEM honda unit is on top, old unit is on bottom.

I will have to say it was kind of pain to change. The two T-stat bolts are unnecessarily hard to get to. I would have swore Hans designed it, but the housing and bolts were made out of metal, so that can't be. Matt, a *working* 10mm gear wrench would have done me wonders. Mine's a little gummed up though. As access is tight you can only rotate whatever is on either bolt a click or two at a time. Yours may be better or worse than mine since you have the TYPE-ARRR.

I'll report back tomorrow after I take it for a drive.

Good luck tomorrow Mike and I hope that's it. I'll probably be ordering the whole shebang in the next week (t-belt & stat, water pump, tensioner, etc..) and just hope for the best. It was running fine here in town the last two days staying at about 40% but the 45 degree highway driving kept it cool earlier in the week. Strange for sure...

Here's how it read for a good portion of my drive down to Union Co. two days ago fwiw...

So for the sake of time, I bit the bullet and had Premium Imports knock out the timing belt and several other little knick knacks along with a new t-stat. I think the car is at full operating temperature but the time I get 1.5 miles out of my driveway on a chilly morning. It wasn't missing, just old.

I noticed my 2000 Focus is slow to warm up this year. I suspect I also have a t-stat that is leaking by a little. It is the original unit.

I was thinking it sounded like a plugged heater core or a bad thermostat. You might have the wrong thermostat.....OR mix the antifreeze with water (50/50 ratio) is incorrect.

Pure antifreeze does not absorb as much heat as water can.

Also, beware propolyene glycol coolants like Engine Ice or Water Wetter it will run too cool for the street.

These items are not intended for a factory condition car. Think of it this way...if the engineers at Honda wanted that stuff in the R....they would of designed special coolant for it! Which would of came from the factory as is.

Qucik question...how is the fuel economy with this R compaired to the last?

If you have too much coolant it will cause the engine to run cooler and cause a rich/lean situation with your fuel system. Engine can be leaning out at first and then qinching.

Steve, the mileage has been pretty much the same right around ~23mpg city with minimal vtec flogging, which has been the highest of all the cars I've owned that ran on premium fuel. No complaints there...

The '97 & '00 Rs and the Si saw right around 20-21 city. The IS sees around 19-20 in town.
