What kills these alternators? Seems early for a modern car . . . especially at Mini prices. My 74 260Z would gradually lose diodes until Datsun improved the part and "something" happened that caused a failure in our 84 200SX. No problems with a series of Mustangs or with our 88 Dodge van (so far).

My 81 Datsun still has the original alternator. I did go in and change the brushes once. I also change an alternator on a Fiat X1-9 once. It was almost as big a bear as the mini.

Apparently engineering is not a strong point in Germany.

Fixed.

A coworker told me a long screw driver could be substituted for the special tool, no? He's not that mechanically inclined either.

Yeah, if you hacksaw off an allen wrench get it to hold in a little hole as you apply pressure with the Big screw driver. There was a lot of cussing and bloodshed when I tried that. Bought the tool.

you know this depresses me. I really really liked the mcs blower car. almost bought one.. so glad i got my subaru now.It has been very tough now, for me. It really fits my position as rally x er. More so than a mini would, despite the heritage.
maybe someday I will have a mini cooper s.. with a lsd front end for sure.Had a open diff front driver once, my sisters old celica gts. I was less than impressed. Loved my se-r of course. My wrx is really being kind to me knock wood. Other than i have to fill it up ALOT! It gets plenty of road miles, reliable road miles too. :sing:
