Why would one want to 'downgrade' from a clutch based LSD to a Torsen?

Depends on the application. Generally speaking, clutch packs are better for drag racing. Torsens are better for curvy racing.

Torsens also don't wear out, where as a clutch will.

Hmmm, I guess. But a TBD goes open if you lift a drive wheel (ie hitting a curb etc) and doesn't transfer torque in deceleration. The OE Mustang LSD is a ~1.5 way, no?

But yes, a TBD (torsen type 2 particularly) is very slow to wear out.

From what I understand, lifting a drive wheel is a bigger issue with a FWD. Under acceleration a RWD is shifting weight to the drive wheels, where a FWD is shifting weight off of the drive wheels.

Do you really want the rear wheels on a RWD car to be connected during deceleration? That's going to increase understeer.
