Why not just pull a cap or 2 to check the bearings? Silver = good, copper = bad.

Hi Mike,
I just re-read my post and left that out--whoops. I pulled off the #5 and #6 bearing cap, both were silver and the crank journal was smooth. Is it worth pulling a main bearing cap as well?

Ah, good to hear. IMO, no -- rod bearings are the typical failure. I'd bet the bottom end is fine! Start her up with someone "experienced" around, armed with a piece of tube or stethoscope. If it's just a sound with no other symptoms (can't recall) like oil pressure problems or performance, I bet it's something simple.

Get a recording of the noise and post it here :)

You should have pulled them (rod bearings) all and checked the top side bearing (the shell that takes the load) while you had access. It's always possible you have just one bad one due to debris, slight tolerance difference from others, etc, many other potential reasons.
